Thing is though, if they still work after 30 years, just when will they degrade? In my limited experience the most common problem is that the tape itself doesn't freely move inside the housing. Other than that most things load no problems on Spectrum, C64, and VIC 20 that I own.
Another problem is the tape going mouldy due to storage problems, which is usual for anything after 20+ years.
Another problem is the racording transfering to next layer of tape magnetically, thus reducing the original signal, I sure there's a technical term for it.
I do like my divide and divide+ and I use them all the time, I can't be arsed to wait for stuff to load
but there are times when I'll chuck in a real tape or use my mp3 player to load stuff
again it all depends on what you want from your experience, mostly for me it's game playing for others it's the whole experience, loading and waiting like when we were kids

I've stored my tapes well (always rewound and kept in their boxes etc) but 2 tapes failed when i last used the spectrum my tape copy of Andoid 1 which was a copy from a guy at school, the tape had turned into a sticky mush and i lost my copy of Metabolis as the tape snapped, it must have turned brittle, so i had to throw them away:sad:
I think the technical term for losing signal due to copying is something like 'generation loss'?
ah the old "i'm not interested" ploy to cut the price, I know ya wanting a bulk buying discount.. it won't work.. murco (he of ultimate land and where they make biccy's) tried the same.. didn't work :)

Ah, fog, the Del-Boy of crap games... I bet you've got some Lithuanian M-a-C's tucked away somewhere that show you how to use an Eastern European deep fat fryer
Seriously though, I have a shed load i'm going to be bunging out in bundles just to make them look good, so why would I want more?

Print through? My grandfather was worried about his open spool tapes getting print through, I bet they'd still be OK. I've got quite a few cassettes, including music ones, and most seem OK to me. I don't know what causes some to jam though. I wonder if their fragility has been over stated.
there are threads about it Mr Knor soup man.. prolly in the hardware section. the hardware implementation is different.. someone else can explain the science part :p
c'mon we don't wanna be repeating another thread :)
I currently have 5 of them big box ghost buster 2's

luckily for si , he's not local really (well 54 miles ) the courier charges would prohibit that :p

99% of the tapes I had (now gone) worked fine... I did have a big pile of Ghostbusters II tapes that didn't work though!
What's the main diff?

Err ... it sold within a day? Technology nowadays! I remember back in the beforetime, one had to wait a week until things eventually sold on ebay.
