Converting jpeg/bmp/gif to SCREEN$ file

edited February 2012 in Development
Might be a bit of a long shot, but is there any way of converting an image file with the correct dimensions/colours to SCREEN$ file that can be loaded into the spectrums display?

I would have thought someone would have came up with a converter program to do this.

Failing that can anyone recommend a decent graphics program that'll run on the emulator?

    Bmp2Scr or Sevenup.

But what do you mean by correct colours? You know Spectrum palette and attributes limitations. Jpg pictures have 16 millions of colours including a lot of shades and colours not present in Spectrum pallette - orange, brown, violet...

Your .scr will be an aproximation of original picture and, let's be honest, often it will look ugly.

Nevertheless, in programs like Bmp2Scr you can fiddle with a lot of settings to get the best result.

I'm using Paint.Net to create a loading screen and needed to convert it to .SCR. It's mostly in monochrome sections so the colour thing wont really be an issue.

    BMP2SCR does the biz nicely...

why not just use zxpaintbrush or sevenup or retro-x, pc utilities to create a speccy screen?

...and actually there are also programs for ZX Spectrum, that can show PC grapfhic formats. :) Although calculating lasts... pretty long. ;)

Yeah, I noticed that. And Martijn only credited Klaus.

Could I possibly have done something to annoy Martijn? (Like, say, being a complete prick about six years ago, and not been forgiven for it? (Actually, I've just read some of those old threads - they're friggin hilarious))

Nahhh... that doesn't sound like Mr. WoS-Himself. No matter how you do, or do not behave, Martijn gives credit where it's due, if and when he knows it. Drop him an email and he'll update the relevant info.

Of course not. Denying credit to somebody's work because he had said something silly several years ago? Are we in kindergarten? ;)

Martijn has a huge website to maintain and ommisions are inevitable. Just report it and your reputation will be restored :)

Yeah just in case it wasn't obvious, my remarks were intended only as humour.

Anyway, I've mailed Martijn to let him know about SCRplus, and await developments.

PS: I can think of a few people in the scene who actually do act in that kindergarten-y way sometimes, but I'd better not say who!

    Confusedous say:
Man who hold mirror for others,
better make sure it not face himself.

    :-P
    :-D

(The preceding reply should be interpreted as a lame attempt at a joke.)

I don't think you've done anything to upset Martijn :-)

He is back from his break and wading through over 1.5 GB of updates.
He gave Number 1. priority to SCRplus! on Feb 1.
