Jon Ritman

edited February 2012 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
Hi folks,

I'm hosting a Q and A with Jon Ritman on Sunday 19th at the GEEK event in Margate. I was wondering if anyone on here had any specific questions they'd like Jon to answer?

The Q and A should be recorded so even if you can't attend the event, you'll still get a chance to watch afterwards.

Thanks very much,
Pete

    Yes. A few:

    1) How long did it take him to write the Batman and Head Over Heels isometric engine?
    2) What other things did he want to implement in the engine but couldn't due to lack of time or other reasons?
    3) Has he ever considered writing a new Speccy game after all this time? Or even something new on new platforms like iOS or Android considering the new wave of retro based games?

    Thanks!

Does Jon look back on the Spectrum days fondly and does he miss anything from those days?

Pokes were very popular back in the day for things like infinite lives because most games were much too hard. Did developers such as Jon ever think of lowering the difficulty to something like today's games?

Has Jon seen the Retrospec remakes of his games? What does he think about them?

Does Jon have a favourite of his own games?

Could Monster Max have been produced as a Spectrum game?

Also, was Monster Max written from scratch, or did he start by importing the HoH source and basing it on that?

...does he still have any of his sourcecodes and would he be willing to release them if he does?

after ultimate released their isometric stuff, which were basically 3d platformers, some 3d isometric games with more adventure features were published, like fairlight, movie or the great escape. did you ever consider, at that time, to do something like that instead of refinining and expanding ultimate's approach?

    only, in english.

    and

what do you think of your early efforts?
    - 3d combat zone
    - bear bovver
    - cosmic debris
    - dimension destructors

    and

on the wos database you're cited as one of the programmers of dark star and forbidden planet -
what part did you have in them?

    and

have you ever seen/played emlyn hughes international soccer on the spectrum?
what do you think of it compared to the match day games?

And did they do drugs, drive around in Ferraris and have drunken orgy parties. :P

On a more serious note, how did they come up with the idea for Head Over Heels? And do they have any sort of nostalgia for the 80's speccy scene and if so, any fond memories that they can share (especially if the involve any of the activities in my previous question)?

It will be very interesting to know what he has to say after all these years. The last interview with him was a while ago:

Would love to know what he's been up to lately - I wonder if he's thought about porting his old games to iOS/Android ( or whether the licences are tied up somewhere ).

I'm pretty sure there was a fairly-recent interview with Jon by someone from Retro Gamer which was recorded in a pub and made available in mp3 format. I remember that Mr Ritman seemed to be eating a burger or somesuch for much of it.

I stayed in touch with him (and interviewed him again) after doing that mini update for my website. From memory, the game was abandoned partly because they couldn't find a publisher.

An N64 version would've been fantastic! Are there any screenshots available?
