PlusD 'plus' ideas

edited February 2012 in Hardware
I am thinking of producing PlusD interfaces.

But I want:
- to leave out the parallel port - is it needed nowadays?
- to include a joystick port

And I want to make it as cheap as possible, so I will try to keep the pcb as small as possible.

Any other ideas? Please keep the above in mind.

Not that much use for a Parallel port on a speccy these days really. Adding a joystick interface (Kempson would be best) would be a good idea.

Reset button if not included already, for rubber keyed machines will be useful.

+1 for a reset switch and joystick

Switchable DOS perhaps (either GDOS or Uni-Dos)?

    LOL...
Asking about obsolete printer port for interface for obsolete Disc drives. I ROFLed!

If you want to leave Parallel port out, do so. I would make my clone with 25 pin Sub-D parallel port because I still need it (my parallel port of +D does not work anymore).
Wanna sell it? Then I woulb buy one, even without WD1772 Chip (still have three of them spare), but only if there is a parallel port. Surely you can add a Kempston joystick port. It would not use much space if you use SMD parts.

Depends. Leave the holes in the PCB so it can be end-user upgraded ;)

    That's a thought. :)

This will save some cents because the needed chip for parallel port costs not a whole Euro.

    Ingo.

    Ingo.

I'm not making the PlusD as someone else is already doing a redesign.

But if I would have, I would have thought of leaving the parallel port out and adding a joystick interface instead.
But indeed, why not keep the parallel port, it's just that I didn't think anyone would use it today.
