It depends on whether you've got a disc based CPC i.e. a 664/6128 or a tape based one (464). The 464 doesn't have the disc controller or AMSDOS ROMs, so you still need an interface to use an FD-1 (called a DD-1 IIRC)
If I remember correctly it can also be connected to any motherboard with IDE controller, and it can be used for preservation purposes. :)
Youre right there Im currently using my other one to record CPC compilations on, I also used it for recording +3 disks too (until my +3 broke and then myhermes lost it on its way for repair)

much like say a joystick box for a 48k speccy etc.
I like buying things with as much re-sale value , hence why I'd want the interface as well.. so it'd attract CPC folk as well as specchums.
Thats the DDI Interface for connecting to CPC464's, sometimes sold with the FD1, I recently had one, boxed that I sold to zeropolis
