Worst gaffes you've made in games

edited March 2012 in Games
What is the worst gaffe or gaffes you've made in a game? Can be a stupid own goal at football, walked straight off a cliff in some game or other, shot your own troops etc

I tried shooting a bush (believe it or not) in Rebelstar 2, hit my own troop and killed him!

Not having any blast torch ammo left is a classic when you haven't broken into the inner control room through the security doors.

And Rygel's Revenge (?) is a classy text adventure, swear and it kicks you out!

  • Resetting the computer in How to be a Complete Bar-steward.

Rocketing the doors in Laser Squad from point blank range.
Priming the grenade and not having enough action points to throw it in Laser Squad.

Dropping the snorkel under the sea in Treasure Island Dizzy.

Being fooled by that one game that does that one thing, where it goes to the R Tape error (or was it the Sinclair Research prompt?) and you unplug the machine, rewind the tape, re-load ... and fall for it again.

You think the tape's bad but days later your friend tells you that it's a joke by the author.

But It Never Happened To Me!

That's right, I always forget it's that one (and yet it's one of my top ten fave games)

Didn't That's The Spirit do something similar quirky?

    there's been millions

However one of my most recent was on MW3, I tried out the perk that makes enemy explosive devises flash up red so you don't trigger them by mistake

I'd never seen an IMS before, so wanted to see what the big red flashy thing was....but I got blown up, some twat must have left a claymore there I thought....so I went back....same thing happened

That's when it dawned on me I was in fact a mupper

potting the white during a big break or/and pressure shot in Steve Davis Snooker. "well annoying"

to die more than once with the same mistake (something I often do on platform games) I'm still not sure if i'm to stubborn or to stupid to keep repeating them...

treasure island dizzy, there was me, there was the boat, just a simple jump to freedom.... you can work out the rest. :-P

Getting over-confident with my high-speed cornering in Turbo Esprit, after the smugglers car, end of the game, one life left, "hello lamp post", high-speed death on the "N15" in Romford, or Gamesborough, or something...

    ... god I love that game! :-)

I thought Esmerelda in JSW was an item the first time I got in that room, and I tried to 'rescue ' her lol. ancient memory dug up there

Yep. Also sliding to cut out a cross in your own area and it hits you on the back of the head and loops into the goal

Accidentally going into the cave systems countless times in Avalon and losing the last bit of energy because of the odd, physics-defying room layout

"Transporting" to almost certain death in a lava vat in Strangeloop after losing a life, thereby losing another life etc. Twitchy fingers!

On the last screen on Tank Command being too quick and getting shot by the huge cannon after weeks of steady progression!

I can't even dock at all these days. Last time I tried I kept clipping the edge of the letterbox...

I'm useless at docking on elite. until finding this site and the archive I'd only ever played it on a BBC B where you could buy an 'automatic dock' thingy. not sure if the speccy version has that?

strangely I don't remember that scenario happening, I'm sure it must've a few times though :-)

I'm pretty sure it has, in fact I think there's even a poke that starts you off with it.

Docking isn't difficult, the key is getting properly lined up with the 'letterbox' to begin with. Once you get that sussed you can usually fly in every time.

I found it tough to get nicely aligned to the correct side of the station to begin with, especially if the entrance was on the other side somewhere - it takes a bit of practice. I found that if I could see any part of the other faces I wasn't dead on and could crash.

Creating a Gooey Blob in Chaos, which then consumed me the very next go...

Not being able to play Wizball properly for years due to not knowing I had to wiggle the joystick for power ups, until I posted about it on here and discovered there were loads of people in the same boat...

Hundreds of different mishaps in platform games where I make it to the boss/end of level/end of game on my last life, only to then limply fall/walk/jump off the edge of a platform by pressing the wrong key....this is a particular skill that I seem to have transferred to modern gaming!

The 'Wizball' one is a belter, and surely has to be the winna!?

Tbh I can understand why you would miss that (especially if you were playing a -ahem- 'backup'). But just thinking of some people wondering how the heck this got a Crash! Smash whilst bouncing uncontrollably around the screen, I guess is a bit like those who 'got' games like OMAHD and Zoids, whilst the rest of us mere mortals dumbly scratched our heads.

Hehe..yeah! When I worked it out, I was like "WhhaaaaaTTT!"

Here's a link to the thread where I enlighten a few other lost souls....

Still makes me wonder what other games would be better if I knew how to play them properly! :D

On Rescue I'm sure I've forgotten to collect four fuel cannisters and of course if you take off without them you crash for lack of fuel!

Worst nightmare on that game though is not carrying a missile/rocket, getting caught by the tanks that are impervious to normal fire and not being able to shake them off. The only way to destroy them is to shoot a missile/rocket and blow everything in the room up - including any teleports, scientists or experiments.

Really frustrating trying to steer the scientists back to the ship

Worst gaffe is accidentally knocking into the control panel and launching the ship without any experiments, scientists or indeed fuel! I may well have done this before I'd left the first room.

Omega One is a game I never really got, looked fantastic. I shot some reactor and it always blew before I got back to the ship, sometimes budget games were good but the instructions were not. I found a skim read of those on here a lot more helpful than the inlay card instructions so may have to give the game another go. Back then there was no internet available to me, one thing my childhood might have been better with.

OMG!!!... You mean Iv been bouncing around randomly all this time for nothing?!?!?... How many bloody years has it been now??!!?... [Shoot... should have read the damn instructions shouldn't I]...?!?!?!?

Holy cow - just tried it, and your absolutely right - bloody frustrating way of doing things...!!!
  • Did you know you can also shoot stuff in R-Type?

Maybe of use to the Wizball crowd! :D
