Certainly The Hobbit. I even included it in my list of top 10 Speccy games ever!

It's still my favorite text adventure of all times. I find it hard to believe such a sophisticated game was released in ZX-Spectrum's first year of existence. The idea of carrying a pile of characters is priceless :)

My favourite is putting on the ring , then punching Elrond whilst Gandalf is present; then watching the two of them beat the living crap out of each other.

There are still a few unknown secrets for me in the game - what's behind the trapdoor in the Goblin dungeon? What does the key from the misty mountains do?

There are still a few unknown secrets for me in the game -
a)what's behind the trapdoor in the Goblin dungeon?
b)What does the key from the misty mountains do?

a)=the curious key, used when the sun shines on a rock when you wait near the dragon lair if i remember correctly.
    b)=never used it

The game can be completed without using a or b as i have explained in an old `hobbit walk through`thread so do not worry lol, they are probably alternative routes for people who like to explore. But the goblins domain to me is time wasting tosh and does not need to be explored, the game can be completed without the ring, just hang around mirkwood like your cottaging, get captured by the wood elf, escape cellar, get to laketown carry bard around with you and get him to shoot smaug the dragon, then back home along the forest path- end of story.

argh can't choose - Galaxians, planetoids, Horace, Spectral Invaders, Space Raiders (can't believe how many releases there were)

I would say it has to be the horizons tape (especially thro the wall) that, with Tim Hartnells Giant Book of Games, helped me to understand basic and pass my O'level computer studies

yes definately the horizons tape for me

... also has to be Horace Goes Skiing for me too. many happy hours spent on this one. :-)

I loved the hobbit - at the time; it was wonderfully atmospheric.

    Annoyances were

    1) the goblin dungeons and having to go through the rigmarole of geting out the window until you worked out the wait, wait, move sequence.

    2) not being able to play the riddle game with gollum without being killed

    3) the non-player characters that you sometimes needed getting killed or lost forcing a restart

    4) random bugs

would have been great to see a 128k remake of this with better location graphics - and graphics for all locations; bugs removed and some of the annoyances fixed. Some very important locations from the book - Elrond's House; Beorn's House etc were pretty much overlooked.

But for 1982 - yes, amazing.

Arcadia for me - sooo playable and holds a lot of charm for me

I'll go with The Hobbit. I was quite young at the time and it was mainly the graphics that made me want it. I remember just seeing the loading screen and thinking "Wow..!". I used to quite like watching how the lines and fills were drawn in the location pics. In hindsight, I think the actual location descriptions were a bit basic but still reckon it's a classic.

Interesting what's been said about Lord of the Rings, I quite liked playing it but remember the "WTF..?!" moment at the mention of 'photographs' in the starting location..!

If I'd played Arcadia in 1982 I might have chosen it, but it didn't seem quite as impressive when I played it a couple of years later.

I'll put 3D Tanx in second place. Quite liked the early DK Tronics games.

As wonderful as "English Literature 1" no doubt was, I'd have to go with Football Manager, simply genius!

Its probably between Time-Gate, and Penetrator

Arcadia was pretty cool, Hungry Horace was alright, Artic's Galaxians was a pretty respectable version too.

Not too keen on management or text adventure so that throws out Football Manager, and The Hobbit for me.

    Horace games and Venture :)

I first had a Speccy in '85, so I missed most of the really early stuff. My favourite has to be Hungry Horace, which came with my first (second hand) Spectrum. I also have a soft spot for Spectres, but I can't really count that as I only played it on the Commodore Plus/4.

    My personal favourite is Penetrator.

Honourable mentions to the aforementioned Hobbit and Artic's Galaxians which looks and plays remarkably like the arcade.

DK'Tronics Centipede was also damned good. Horace Goes Skiing because it was an early example of multiple games in one, and they were all quite good (Frogger and skiing). Frenzy, the Berzerk clone from Quicksilva.

But my absolute fave is Penetrator. Still one of the best Speccy games of all time, one I still play (on the rubber devil) to this day.

Horace Goes Skiing gets my vote if there as any.

It came with my ZX Spectrum with other games and I played it to death so much so that i had to go and buy another copy.
