Games that never got made...

Which games based on films, series, comics and characters tied to pop culture
would you have liked to exist?

I think Watchmen (the comic book) would have made a great videogame.

I also think it's unbeliebable that Nightmare On Elm Street never got a videogame!

I always wondered why Bananaman never got a game. I'm with you though on Nightmare on Elm Street.....then again Friday the 13th stunk so that would maybe have been Freddy's fate too.

lol@Bananaman... I remember that character, my sister used to bring me those The Dandy comics whenever she went to the UK for holidays...

    Stunk really bad, didn't it...

Misfits of Science would have been fun. I can imagine it as a Shadowfire style game.

McGyver would have been cool too. :)

I'm more familiar with the cartoon rather than the comic which I watched a lot growing up and looking back I'm surprised no-one took up a license for it. I'm picturing a Bomb Jack clone where he collects bananas instead of bombs.

And I reckon no-one would know what to do with Nightmare on Elm Street, it was clearly the case for Friday the 13th, like they never really seen the movie, they just heard about it and thought "we'll 'av some of that".

Then comes The Evil Dead, it was only out as a "bonus" game with Cauldron for a reason.

That one was actually made. It was released as the incredible machine:

Weird Science seems like an obvious movie that would have converted well to a game. I can see a side scroller type adventure thing or a platformer.

    Ooooh! Good call.

I'm thinking Top Secret might also work.

It's daft to say 'that would have made a great game' when you look at the quality of licensed Speccy games. More accurate would be to say 'that would have made an average clone of an existing game with a franchise slapped on the packaging'.

Look at all the bland scrolling vehicle games, or all those identical platform dodging/collecting games based on Hannah-Barberra properties. At least arcade conversions had a playable idea to go on.

I recently watched Cobra to try and spot all the game/film references and it's pretty hilarious to note the things that obviously stuck in Joffa's mind and the skewed ways he worked them into the game. The game itself is barely a parody of the film.

There was a videogame based on Nightmare on Elm Street but as far as I know it was only released on the NES:

Well in the case of Weird science I think the graphics were better back in 1985...

  • A Withnail and I text adventure would have been pretty cool.

There was Garfield, there was Scooby Doo, so how come the poor mans equivalent was never made?

There was never a Heathcliff or Marmaduke game.

Fair play they'd probably have been crap, and they'd probably have been made by Hi-Tec, or Alternative Software, and been very generic platformers, or very low standard arcade adventures. But you never know they might have had a certain charm about them even if they were crap? :D

The Punisher never got a speecy game either, although I remember there were plans to do so, or even an "in develpment" project...

Yep by The Edge. Shame that never made it. :-(

Lost. Maybe a text adventure, would be great.

Agree with a McGiver game, in Pyjamarama style, where you must use many objects, etc

No it isn't really because then Tim Langdell would've sued everyone else who tried to make one, and then there'd be no punisher games at all, apart from a one made by Edge on the Speccy which would probably have been crap :D

There was a Lost game made a few years back called Via Domus. Unfortunately it was a bit crap. I bought it, played it for about ten minutes then put it away. :)

You beat me too it with the Nightmare game. There was one on the Amiga too IIRC.

Also, The Watchmen got a game (eventually) too. Released on XboxLive and PSN (and later as a disc release) it was panned and was infact, complete pants :(

But neither got a Speccy release.

I've always been surprised that there was never a Police Academy game. At least on the 8 bits. I mentioned this before and I think someone came up with a PC or Amiga release, or a game that was canned in development at least. I think it could have been in the same style as Combat School etc, but with some added comedy and a big set piece level at the end, just like the films ;-)

The Six Million Dollar Man / The Bionic Woman could've been good imo. you could choose which one to be and do little missions, then maybe a 2 player mode using both...

erm, I love those hi-tec hanna barbera conversions tbh. scooby doo and scrappy doo, yogi's great escape, and wacky races in particular. the scrolling and graphics are good.

there were more made that never got released: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Augie Doggy. they're listed Never Released in the archive and I would love to play them one day, probably never will though.

(the ones that I did think were crap were Top Cat, and Roadrunner + Wile E Coyote...zero gameplay in either!)

Beanz, your pic isn't showing (but I can imagine what it was).

I would've wanted a decent Star Trek game in yhe same style as Captain Blood or Elite.

    Other possible platformers:

Captain power and the soldiers of the future
    Sherlock Holmes

I would have thought Philip Mitchell's adventure suited the source material better. Basil The Great Mouse Detective is probably the closest you're going to get to a Sherlock platform game anyway. :)

Though not in the same style, I definitely enjoyed Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Fallen, as a combination FPS + adventure/rpg.

It was a kelly lebrock 'then and now' photo.

Funny Kelly Lebrock was a bit of a mong by the early 90's I remember that Brut ad she did, she looked awful in that.

Now she looks like a weeble with rubber raft lips.

I imagine UFO (S.H.A.D.O.) as a computer game for Spectrum, but nowdays it should be modernized a little bit, with badass designs and no interceptors on moon base (they always miss one UFO), but replaced with Laser canons.
Also Space 1999 would be a nice game. Was not there a isometric Space 1999 for Oric? No chances for a Spectrum version?

they did a prison break game on the 360, not sure what its like. maybe the first level was heart poundingly good, the second picks up great from the first, the third was a bit bit meh, but you went along with it, and the fourth was awful, and maybe they even did a dlc concentrating on the lady doctor which was terrible. :p
