support for modern controllers

edited April 2012 in Emulators
Why is support for modern USB controllers so bad in emulators?

For instance, I am using Xbox Controller S connected with Speedlink adapter but the real usage is very limited:

only left thumb stick and digital buttons are working.. the rest not recognized by emulators (tried Spectaculator and Spin); the Windows XP Speedlink driver does work! see the left Window.. every single part is working including analogue triggers and vibration... so where is the problem?

Why would you need 10 buttons, 2 sticks, one digital pad and force feedback in a computer that allowed only 4 directions and one button?

Also, remember that there are two APIs for joysticks, Xinput and DirectInput. Sometimes features present in one API are not present in the other, and sometimes one device only supports one of them (e.g.: a device with only XInput drivers will still work in DirectInput games, but without force feedback support; a device without XInput drivers sometimes is not supported in games like Braid or The Maw).

If you need to use all your buttons, sticks and those things, please use joytokey to remap buttons to keys.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

Thanks for the joytokey. I am going to check that software.

Rather than 10 buttons, I did need 2 sticks to play Robotron. The more comfort the better gameplay.

Again, I would like to thank you for letting me know about Joy2key. Now I am using both digital pad and front triggers. There is still issue with right stick being read too precize or something like that because it often reads more than one directional value making it quite difficult to control anything. Of course I have the controller calibrated. I will try to sort that out later. That software seems to be pretty good and has a lot of extra options and tweaks.

Your better off using an Xbox 360 controller as M$ has drivers for it and its supported on many Linux distros.

No way that crap! Its digital pad is completely useless. Bad idea really. Sold that RRoD crap back in 2007 and certainly do not want to hear about it again. Never...
