3D TV's

edited May 2012 in Chit chat
Has anyone here got a 3D tv and are they worth getting? I've been thinking of upgrading my telly for a while as my current one was a quick replacement as my old one blew just before Christmas a couple of years ago and I didn't have the money for a decent one then. But, I've got a few bob together and am thinking of upgrading.

I've seen one in Argos for ?300. It's a 32" passive 3D. But, what's the difference between passive and powered 3D and will I be able to tell the difference on a telly that size? I don't want a bigger telly as I don't really have the space for anything larger.

To ask a slightly different question - If you get a 3D telly what are you going to watch on it in 3D?

There is hardly any content put out by the TV companies and you would need a 3D capable disc player if your going to watch one of the very few available DVD / Blu-rays.

3D is really best seen on the big screen not on a small TV so you won't even get a lot of the effect even on a 50" TV.

    Just asking.

I bought a 50" Panasonic in January last year, that also has 3D. The 3D effect works pretty well.
I bought a PS3 to be able to play 3D movies, but it broke after 6 months and I haven't bothered to buy a new 3D player, so I'm stuck with 2D until I decide to shell out for a new 3D player. I only have 3 3D movies though, so it's not a big loss. :)

As long as you have the 3D channels on Sky you should be okay. Otherwise there's (AFAIK) no other channels broadcast in 3D, though I've heard a rumour that BBC will be outputting the next Wimbledon in it.

IIRC passive is just the normal glasses that you'll wear at the cinema, powered requires batteries in the glasses.

I don't agree with ADJB. The 3DS has a tiny screen and that's perfectly respectable. My bro in law has a passive 42" LCD and the 3D on that is very, very good indeed.

    .

I think there are quite a lot of console games that support 3D. I have never seen a 3D TV in action but FPS + 3D sounds great in theory!

I have a few 3D movies and a PS3 that will output them in 3D. Plus, there are more and more console games coming that display in steroscopic 3D. I don't have Sky and never will (I hardly watch tv when at home so it's a waste of money). But it's mainly for the games if I'm honest.

Which brings me to another question, does the Xbox360 display in 3D if running through the composite cables (the HD ones) or does it need to be through a HDMI cable? I only have a core system and that doesn't have an HDMI socket :(

I've got a SAMSUNG Smart PVR, that converts normal 2D to 3D.

    Haven't got a 3D TV however!

I'm not sure if its worth it, as ADJB said there isn't a lot of 3D content out there. Also from a historical perspective every attempt to promote 3D movies, from the 1950s onwards has failed. Partly because the movies weren't that good in the first place and used 3D as a gimmick which a lot of the current crop of films are doing now. Also I doubt you'll be seeing 3D telly programmes becoming common place due to the cost involved in producing them.

So I personally would say 'no it is worth it' simply due to the cost of it and history. But I could be wrong here but if more 3D console games were to come then which is what you are primarily using it for, that might change things.

3D is rubbish even on the big cinema screen, Tron Legacy was atrocious (as was the couple of others I've seen).
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

Best place for 3D viewing is the cinema. Not worth getting in the home IMO.
