TZX image of Elite which bypasses Lenslok

edited May 2012 in Games
Hullo all,
Woe is me for my telly is too big to make the Lenslok work properly with Elite. Unfortunately I also can't change the aspect ratio of the television (it's widescreen).

Does anyone know whether I can get a TZX image that automatically bypasses Lenslok. I have a copy of the game with Lenslok and all but my tape recorder has also packed it in so I'm connecting my laptop directly to the speccy. I don't have a multiface so I don't think I can get a POKE In that way.

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately I need to be able to run it on my real 48k spectrum - it's actually for my masters dissertation and I'm talking about what it was like to use the rubber keys etc. When I decided to use this one I thought the Lenslok wouldn't be a problem but there you go.

Bizarrely, though the joystick club tape image works on the emulator it won't work on the actual spectrum. It's very odd. It loads and then just hangs at the end.

the "128k version" runs on 48K Spectrum too. Unfoprtunaly the lenslock in Elite is a perfect copy protection and no one was able until now to hack it. I had somewhoere a multiface copy of Elite 48 around, with snaphot taken after lenslock, but I do not like Multiface game copies. Maybe it is deleted now?

Wait, that can't be right. I remember looking at it and it was a piece of cake to get rid of the lenslok call. It was NOP-ping out one CALL or JP or something.

(Long time ago though, don't blame me if I'm misremembering.)

Thanks for all your help everyone and especially to LCD for their suggestion to try the 128k version. All seems well now, I wouldn't have thought it would work. That's saved me a sleepless night :)

I remember I complained and sent my tape back and received a lenslok free copy.

I have never successfully got passed a lenslok screen. To me it's like them magic eye pictures, I just don't see it.

tell me about it. I even tried it on an emulator on my little laptop screen to see how it would work and I couldn't get it right. Messed about with the calibration for ages. Jeebus.

I had a copy of 48k Elite when I was a kid - big box version, included Dark Wheel novella and BBC version manual. Didn't include the ship chart poster.

It didn't have lenslock - straight ROM loader.

The tipshop has a hack that bypasses lenslok:

    http://www.the-tipshop.co.uk/cgi-bin/info.pl?wosid=0001601

Search for Lenslok, the bit is near the end of the page to bypass it.

I'd just like to say - I also did something along similar lines back in 1994 or so. It was indeed a trivial hack.

No need to apologise, LCD - Thanks for the memories! :D

Haven't tried my boxed version of Elite with my 48+, the 128 version runs fine on my +2 though

You can use it on a modern TV..I did it just a few weeks ago on a 37" LCD TV. There IS some guess work involved, Adjust the size to small as possible, then I studied how the "ok" looked (I think I had to stand slightly to the left side rather than head on). When I was happy I could make out roughly the OK then I proceeded, worked on my first "guess".

From there make your own multiface type snapshot so you don't have to do it again.
