I've just spent the day at Wembley
Watching Crewe Vs Cheltenham
Excellent game and even better result. All our academy kids, 9 home grown players in the starting 11, really played well which shows that lower league teams can put a half decent team out without going bankrupt.
Parked at Stanmore as normal for wembley and then got ripped off for ?8.50 for 4 stops on the tube, Another ?1.49 and I could have gone on holiday with the Sun. Went down to the Green Man (quite a famous pub in Wembley) and it was chocka with Crewe fans. Seemed strange I hardly saw any Cheltenham fans outside the ground. That was explained when I got inside and found they had hardly brought any fans. No support, don't deserve to go up. At least all our glory hunters turned out in force.
Now watching which of the big teams will loot half our team before next season. Apparently the word is that Powell will be in the premier league in the next year or 18 months. Did himself no harm today with a great goal.
I will take a special pleasure tomorrow going into the bookies and collecting my winning on Crewe getting promoted.
Happy bunny tonight - Going to attack a few celebratory beers now the car is parked up for the night.

stanmore is err jubilee line ? it shouldn't cost that much.. was that with a travel card or oyster ? .. if you paid cash then yep you will get stung, maybe the travel card was ALL zones ? again you don't need 1-2 probably etc . Oyster will stop that, to maybe half that cost.
you could park nearer probably, but I'd rather not say where as it's a friends road and it's a PITA to get parking there on match days.
sunday there are places , even where I am that sunday is free parking. Not sure if the "event day" area applied for your day. Next time , go dollis perhaps, and take the bus up to the stadium perhaps.
green man on dagmar ave aka mnt Everest? know it well , you used to be able to park if ya paid there. I only know the road well as I used to go college with a girl a few doors down from there and it's flipping steep past that pub.
What are these travel cards and Oysters of which you speak, we don't possess this witchcraft outside the M25.
It is the Jubilee line and its 4 stops to Wembley Park. The good thing about Stanmore is that all day parking at the station is ?1 and its less than 5 mins off the M1 which is perfect for a quick escape back to the land of whippets and flat caps. It was event day parking restrictions but (although I didn't know before I got there) there were options for parking from ?10 in various places like a club car park, hotel car park ect. ?30 to actually park at the stadium. That would have still made it more expensive to drive all the way in and added a lot of extra time on my return journey. The Green Man had arranged to take a few coaches from Crewe so I couldn't have parked there. They had about a dozen coaches parked up when I got there.
If your coming down the M1 Stanmore has always been the place to stop and from what I saw on Sunday its still the best option.
But I should be thankful we didn't get relegated. And at least next season I don't have to endure those tense Vale-Crewe matches! (Actually, thinking about it, there will be *no* derbies for Vale next season, with Crewe and Shewsbury going up, and Macc going down).
Good season for my lot (York City). Got promoted back to the football league and won the FA Trophy. Two Wembley finals and won both :) I used to go and watch them regularly in the mid-late 80s in the eras of Keith Walwyn and Marco Gabbiadini. Not been for a long while though. Might be accused of being a glory supporter now that they're back in league 2
no your just loaded none londoners who splash the cash :)
if you are gonna visit here a few times, it'll pay for itself soon to get a oyster card.
but sunday , the local places aren't so strict on parking outside the "event day" zone.. just don't go event zone or harrow.. a friend almost got a ticket 5am on a sunday morning !!!
you could park around here and take the bus maybe say 15 minutes and it'd cost you the big some of ?2.60 *IF* ya paid by oyster.. or down the road from wembley if you don't mind a hhmm 15 minute walk, as I doubt any buses can go up to Wembley :) (they try to encourage the tube)
I bought carpets for every room in my flat, came to around ?600, I pulled out a wad and said 'discount for cash', they didn't even want to take cash at all, let alone give a discount. They reckon it costs them money to take cash, as they have to bank it each day due to insurance reasons.
Dunno about oysters, but I can get a lot of winkles here, hopefully they will be currency one day.
Anyway, back OT.
Here is a picture of my son from when we went to Wembley. He scored a goal and got some Wembley grass too :)
Are you still in receivership?
Last I heard the council had wiped out there debts so you could do some sort of voluntary liquidation or something so somebody else could buy you debt free - Is that Chunda or whatever his name is still trying to get his decidedly soiled mitts on you?
I hope for your sake he doesn't get control or your ground will be sold quicker than you can say ASDA.
Top photo!.
What was the competition?
Personally I don't agree with play-offs even though its worked to our advantage this time.
We finished 11 points behind 3rd place and as far as I am concerned, and practically every manager will say this, the best team(s) will always be at the top of the league at the end of the season and the worst teams will be at the bottom. That's why you play ~40 odd games, home and away, to find the best and the worst. For us to be promoted over 3 teams which performed better than us over a full season seems very unfair to me.
Having said that I also find the Champions League a farce when at least 50% of the teams competing aren't champions.
Of course I realise its all down to money and I don't have a problem with the extra cash it will bring into the club this year. It means realistically we don't have to sell any players this year to make a profit. (We can just about break even without selling but the extra income is invested in the academy which provides the players rather than having to buy them. Its a catch 22, we need the money to invest to save us spending the money or something like that)
If your going to have play offs I would rather see something like 3rd (and 4th?) from bottom of the higher league playing 3rd (and 4th?) from the top of the lower league. I would expect the lower league team(s) to win most years but it would also be a realistic test of the lower league teams ability to compete (albeit at the bottom) of the higher league. The money grabbing is here to stay though so I might as well just accept it and say we fully deserved to be promoted over those other teams which scored many more points than us.
I can't remember what the competition was called. It was quite a while ago, when the stadium had just been finished.
There were 12 teams from across the country that qualified for the play off's at wembley.
I was a very proud father that day :)
i didn't know york had a football team. where is the stadium?
yeah, where in york. ;)
They play at Bootham Crescent. It was rather embarrassingly renamed KitKat Crescent for about five years due to a sponsorship deal with Nestle. Thankfully it's back to its original name now :)
York got to the semi-final of the FA Cup when my dad was a nipper :-P
