just curious if anyone here has fitted any front door ones, or more specifically replaced a night latch.

is there a standard for them ? regardless of maker so I can re-use the same holes? I notice they are either 40mm or 60mm .. from centre of keyhole to door edge.

and if your looking for the knockers thread it's over

I guess I'll find out later :)

Yes, you should be able to get a lock of matching dimensions fairly easily. As you've found, there are some variations. I found it easiest just to take my existing lock to B&Q to match the size against.

DIYNot has some decent info and an excellent forum for answering questions on all sorts of home repairs:

For years I've used that as my first port of call for all sorts of odd jobs, most recently a dodgy washing machine.

Does this have something to do with Chavs or that story of the guy at the post office? Are they coming for you? :-D

nothing at all, door mechanism just broke.. and the timing.. or maybe because I heard a load of spectrum owners were flying in to heathrow :p

sadly wasn't a "standard" fitting.. so used wood filler to fill in the gap from before, from the previous lock.

I had a friend around anyway doing the work, who is good at such things. because the door is something that I don't want to mess up (stained glass etc)

the old lock , could be "double locked" from the outside.. this one you have to from the inside, so makes it even more secure I guess and obviously they can't just break glass / pull the lever.
