Your first mobile phone

edited July 2012 in Chit chat
Here is mine:
S6303136.jpg

The Siemans C10, purchased in 1998 when I was 18 years of age. I can remember being at college at the time, and having to switch it off and hide it in my bag because the other lads would take the pi$$, asking "what the hell do you need a mobile phone for?" - only a few of us had one at the time.

It was on Vodafone Pay As you Go and was back in the days when, on buying a top-up, you had to choose whether to spend it on credit or 'days', or a combination of both.

This was my first mobile, probably from around '98/'99, can't remember exactly. It never broke down on me though, 'twas a trusty old brick! :-D

Nokia 5210 for me. It survived going through the washing machine (big night out) - just stripped it down and let it dry out for a while. I've still got it!

Nokia 2010, purchased in ~95. A brick of a phone, with a standby time of 20 hours, if you were lucky. As soon as you used it, standby time dramatically reduced.

Mobile phones are the worst invention known to man, I hate the bl**dy things.

Anyone on here apart from me who HASN'T got one?

I'd like to say it was this one...

but in actual fact it was this lil beauty... (actual size?!)

The first time I ever used a telephone (it was in a call-box) was to call Crash magazine before it folded. I left them alone until the late 1990s. By 2000 I'd made about 10 phone calls (all Speccy relelated) and then bought my first ever phone; the one you see above. Texting was uber-fast. Never since have I been able to text so quickly, it was great. I've still got it, but it gets too hot to use.

    Them were the days,
    Pay As You Go =
    Phone call: 2p per minute
    Texts : Unlimited (free)

    And that's it.

My first one was this (can't find a better quality image right now):

    Motorola-Flip-Phone.gif

It was circa 1995, on the BT Cellnet network, at a time when you could choose between analogue or digital mobile phones. It had a whopping 8 hour standby time, and a battery you could beat whales to death with.

I have to say though, that since I worked at Dixons/Currys from 1998 - 2011, this thread is really bringing back memories of the phones we sold. Especially the Philips that Greencard posted. Hell, we sold **** loads of those since they were the cheapest of the new 'pay as you go' range, usually on BT Cellnet/O2.
  • My first was the Motorola one, the same as in Graz's pic.

These days I've only got a Nokia 3120. I hardly use it, except to confirm meeting times with people or to let them know I'm going to be late etc. Pay as you go. I top up about ?5 every two months :)

Mine was on Orange (actually had the Orange logo underneath the screen), but yes I'm pretty sure it was the cheapest I could find at the time.

I had a pager before that, one of those that just gave you the number of the person trying to call you. I quite liked that, because if I didn't want to speak to said person I'd just say "sorry mate, couldn't find a payphone at the time"...

    ^^^^One of them^^^^

I remember being chuffed to bits with it. I got it for work as I was training to be an assistant manager and was working all over South London at the time, so it was hard for people to find me (but great for bunking off and going shopping) so I bought this baby on a ?15 a month contract. Pay as you go had only just come out and the phones were stupidly expensive, plus, any credit left over after 4 weeks was removed and you had to top up again!

I cancelled the contract after the first year and it was another 4 or 5 years before I got another phone (another Motorola)

Where's your technological cut off then?

Presumably you have a house phone and a TV. And you obviously have the internet. :-?

First phone I bought myself. Had a variety of bricks from work before that. I was involved in the manufacture of many of the PCB's for Ericsson, Nokia, and Alcatel phones during the 90's.

ericsson 237 I had back in '94, on Cellnet reception was aweful wher I lived in the north of Stoke-on-Trent but brilliant in the south something to do with the orientation of the transmitter, think the call plan was ?50 or ?75 a month depending on which you went for I think I was on the ?50

My first an Alcatel brand with a flimsy slide out panel that revealed a keyboard underneath it. It was a third-hand phone bought from a friend for a mere Rs. 1000/- (11 GBP in today's rate). But it was solidly built with a small antenna and a 3 line LCD display, but it was quite cute looking. I bought it when the cell phone "revolution" had just about taken off in India (i.e late 90's) and so call rates etc were dirt cheap what with everyone trying to out do each other. Come to think of it call raters are still dirt cheap compared to rates in other countries!

    Nowadays I use these:

My first one was a Vodafone model (can't remember which one). I got it in 1999. It was a prepaid one, you would top up and had to use the money in 7 days or it would expire and you would have to top up again.
All you could with it was make calls and text, it didn't have any internet access (i'm not sure that even existed in 1999).

I remember being soo happy when I got hold of a Nokia 7110, because it did the same thing as the movie-modified 8110 from The Matrix, where the mouthpiece popped down at the press of a button:

Now, I have one of these, the Samsung Galaxy SII, and it's bloomin' lovely:

This is the closest pic I can find to what mine looked like, it was an Ericsson, but I can't remember the number code thingy for it? The handset looked pretty much identical to this one but the aeriel was different to this one, and looked like a shorter version of the aeriel from a Ericsson 337? The aerial wasn't solid either it was rubbery, which ultimately resulted in it's eventual demise.

Yep, got a house phone and internet, haven't got a telly, just watch it on the computer (most of it I don't bother with).

Be honest, what does your life consist of? Me, either I'm at work, pub, home, asleep. Why do I (or you) NEED a mobile phone?

And no, I'm not on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter et al either.

What did we do without mobiles before, I hear you ask? Well, we bl**dy well booked things in advance.

Now all I get is "Hallo mate, I need a taxi...eh, whossat, I can't hear you...I'll SPEAK UP" when it is completely obvious that they are speaking in a noisy pub or nightclub. Only it isn't obvious to them because they are pissed up or a f***ing moron.

    Why do I need one?
I don't have a land line so no 'house' phone. I don't have broadband but I have no data limit with my mobile contract. I use my iPhone to play music both using headphones and in using a dock in the flat. I use it as an alarm and as a calendar and a diary. So, yeah, it has it's uses for me.

For example, on a Sunday day time, on a photoshoot on location in a woodland. I don't drive and I need to organise a taxi or pickup from a roadside a little walk from where I am. I can't be certain of the time. A mobile phone is invaluable then.

Let's say you're on holiday abroad and there's some sort of family emergency back home. Without a mobile, there's no guarantee that someone would be able to get in contact with you. It's happened to me.

Not everyone needs a mobile phone, but to question the need for anyone to have one is just plain short-sighted of you.

I had a nokia 8110, around 97/98! (before I saw matrix, not sure if before the movie came out...)

still think it was one of the coolest phones ever!

Yet you use the internet? What did you do before the internet? You used books, encylopedia, etc. And you bloody well booked things in advance

My mobile phone has replaced my gps, laptop (most of the time), desktop (most of the time), and TV (netflix and youtube is enough for me). It's also my planner, organizer and portable Spectrum emulator. It's also an e-reader when I travel.

Incredibly useful. Oh, and I also use it as a phone!
