OK lets be honest, which great games were infact TOO FUGGIN HARD

edited March 2006 in Games
Leading on from another thread there are many great speccy games, so called Crash Smashes etc etc. But infact are they that good when they're so bloody hard. Where staying alive is entirely dependent upon luck.

I Ball 1 and 2 are without doubt original ,well programmed and fun games. BUT FUGGIN HELL you die every 5 seconds....whats the point.

Stormlord 1 and 2......great graphics, great sound......BUT I FUGGIN DIE EVERY 5 SECONDS.

Cybernoid 1 and 2, without doubt are great great programs. Even today they look pretty good. BUT COME ON.....FUGGIN HELL....STAYING ALIVE ON SOME SCREENS IS ENTIRELY DEPENDENT UPON LUCK

Is it a coincidence that this thread is right next to the Junar Jetman one? :)
  • edited February 2005
I forgot to mention that I don't place Lunar Jetman in this category cos yes its difficult, but you die cos your reflexes aren't quick enuff, not enuff zen blah blan but not because you turn up to the next screen to find your surrounded by a invicible alien who gives you 1 tenth of 1 millisecond to switch to the correct gun to kill him........(calming down now :D)

    "fahrenheit 3000" no doubt! :)

What was that isometric game mentioned on this forum ages ago - where it was almost impossible to get off the 1st screen even using snapshots?

something to do with the SAS if I remember rightly?
  • edited February 2005
I found it - SAS Operation Thunderflash.

Doesn't seem quite so impossible - I got off the 1st screen after all - but it's still absurdly difficult in the worst possible way.

I came across one called 'Magic Carpet'. I thought i would try it as the name obviously reminded me of that classic game on the PC.

Its one of the worst, most difficult crappiest games i've ever seen

Its amazing, theres just 3 screens, all hard as hell then thats it, game over. Terrible terrible game. Cant believe anyone released it (map layout : ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games-maps/m/MagicCarpet.png)

The programmer Andrew Gosling should be shot ! ;)

Well, I'd certainly classify Lunar Jetman as too hard. Two other games we've had recent posts about - Technician Ted & Jack and the Beanstalk - would seem to qualify too. Also, what about Air Wolf, Abu Simbal Profanation, Army Moves, Navy Moves, Rasputin, Sabre Wulf?

    <sits & waits for backlash>
  • edited February 2005
    Yeah I tried Airwoof......Ridick.le.ARSE. Y, Y, Y , Y.

Errmmm not sure about Sabrewoof. Errr its not that hard is it?! Going to have another look.

TotalRecall moves, looks and sounds very good, but is veryvery difficult.
    GhoulsNghosts is very difficult.
in Athena I cannot walk not even a few meters.

but the most ridiculous is Cyberrun. simply absurd level of difficult.
  • edited February 2005
Bloody JSW, couldn't get anywhere on that game :(

I would say that Ghosts 'n' Goblins is more difficult (especially the second level) than Ghouls 'n' ghosts, but it is shorter.

Funny reading some threads on this forum as some people think Atic Atac is so easy yet despite playing it tons i've never come close to completing it !

Whereas even though Airwolf is very very tricky me and my mate used to play that tons and complete it. A few little methods used here and there as it was very very hard but was beatable.

Cyberrun i totally agree with, i think the game looks great but just so hard

Dynamite Dan. Tried making an RZX of it. Too bloody difficult, even with rollback.

Also, Technician Ted 48k is proving to be a 'mare to RZX. About half way through it so far.

Count Duckula 2. Not only is it soul destroyingly bad, but it's abso-frigging-lutely impossible.

Even with rollback, I had to give up on RZXing it.

But Atic Atac is really easy to complete. I'm rubbish at most spectrum games yet I can finish Atic Atac every time.

Airwolf is ridiculously hard though. I think I made it to the third screen (the one where you shoot the blocks underneath you) the last time I played it about ten years ago. Cyberun is really hard too. Lunar Jetman is still, in my opinion anyway, the most difficult game out there. I can barely last 10 seconds before I die.
  • edited February 2005
I remember now Atic Atac you were good at but i'm hopeless at that game

As for Airwolf that screen you are talking about you dont even have to shoot that barrier above the base. Go back to the screen on the right, then immediately fly into the original screen and then you can fly straight away beneath the wall.

I don't agree with some games some of you have commented.

    - Stormlord: Don't know what must be your problem, but this game is really VERY playable. I can finish 1st level on my 2nd or 3rd attempt. It's difficult 'cause it has some nasty zones where you have to measure your steps very carefully while not being able to pause for time constraints. But you don't "fuggin die in 5 seconds", come on... (By the way, I'm not english, what does "fuggin" mean???)

    - Navy Moves: this game is playable too, some people has finished it without rollback or anything. I was able back in the old days to get to the octopus part without any pokes help, and the 2nd load is still playable, however that doesn't mean you can reach the end on your 1st or 2nd try.

I agree with Abu Simbel Profanation, Army Moves, Cyberun, Airwolf, Cybernoid and Lunar Jetman. But I think people tend to qualify this games with thoughts that are only suitable for games of the XXI century. Nobody would want to play Half Life if you would have to re-play the first minute of playing about 30 times. That's what you have to do in many 80's games to learn the game mechanic. Say Exolon. If you don't learn the path the foes move, your own limitations on targeting, jumping, shots reaching and so, you won't get too far (not even 5 screens). Patience is the word. But Exolon is an excellent game. If that behaviour were applied to an actual game, it would be classified as utterly rubbish...

Don't know if you see my point. Stormlord is a difficult game, but if you play it the needed times, you will get further every time. On the other hand, in spite of the many times I've tried and played Lunar Jetman, I still last the same as the first time, and that IS annoying, your learning doesn't help with the game. That should be the line to qualify and not just simply "if you last more than 5 seconds".

    Kind regards.

I seem to remember Roller Coaster from Elite being pretty nigh on impossible. I could be wrong though - I couldn't play it when I first tired it so never went back to it.
  • edited February 2005
I wouldnt say Rollercoaster is hard. To complete it practically 99.9% impossible though, just to wander round, go on different rollercoasters is quite easy though.

That games a bit like Knight Lore to me, i'll never complete it but i quite enjoy going round the rooms trying to find new areas etc

lol........I think this thread should be renamed to some games we were good at and some we were crap at !!! :D

Give me Lunar Jetman any day over Stormlord :o
  • edited February 2005
actually one trick with Lunar Jetman is that you have to have a finger on the fire button ALL THE TIME.

Spray that pretty laser everywhere....its free :o

Wot? No adventure games? Some were very bloody tough.

For instance *I* found Sherlock Holmes tough mainly because of my distinct lack of knowledge regarding London geography (ok, so I suck at it otherwise too). Sure I could have found a map and played it that way, but I couldn't be arsed.

As for other games: I didn't get very far in Sabrewulf, Alien 8 (it was in fact rather boring IMO), Green Beret, Army Moves, etc to name a few.
  • edited February 2005
Virtually every arcade game for the Spectrum could be included on my list, I don't think ever finished one game. The only games I've finished are adventure games. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy them, just that I'm completely shite at them.

I display a complete lack of hand to eye coordination...

Why it is I do not know, but I found Sabre Wulf and Atic Atac easy-peasy. Admittedly I had to have a lead weight pressing down the fire key on Sabre Wulf whilst I moved around the maze, but I mapped and completed it with every variant position of the four parts of the amulet before I moved on to more challenging games.

I found Pyjamarama and Jasper too hard. I gave up on both after a few hours of getting absolutely nowhere.

    * Starts considering *

Although it's a great game, don't you think that Wizball is... well... ridiculous hard really? When you're bouncing, and change screen, if there's something there that you could not see you're dead, period. Besides, control is clumsy. :)

I think this thread should be named Games that are too hard or that you just didn't had the patience.

Similar previous thread (I think there may be others...)

As I said in the above, Xavior is impossible to complete (except by cheating) because the end-game code doesn't work... :(
