New recoloured game - After The War 1 :)

edited October 2013 in Games
As suggested and requested by some people I tried my skills with adding colour to this well known Spanish beatemup.

And well... I did it :) I can say I'm getting a practice. Have a look:

191.png

The game had a smooth scroll so I had to disable it and make it move by 8 pixels to avoid clash.

I tried two different colour schemes and couldn't decide which one I like better. So I included them both ;), possible to choose from the game menu.

The 1st one uses quite a lot of intense dark colours like red or violet and is more apocalyptic. But the sprite may seem to disappear there. The second one uses less colours and milder ones but the sprites may be better visible. Make your choice :)

As the game is hard I've also hacked it to have more time, lives and energy.

There are some little glitches with colours (it's a dirty hack after all :) )and I'm not claiming that using colour is better here then monochrome but I'm still quite happy with it.

Here's the download. Enjoy :)

    *Yum!*

There was an English version... any chance of applying the same technique to that one?

Good stuff, now try Double Dragon 2 and make the bad guys lay on the floor longer rather than just jumping straight back up after they get knocked down :)

I'm so glad you took up my suggestion!

it looks really amazing: the game it should have always been! (and you are really getting the hang of it)

do you get a gun later in the game?

Its still difficult even with the new difficulty level
  • edited July 2012
The gun appears in the 2nd part (a separate download).

I checked it and it looks like it uses the same engine as part 1, so I'll try to add colour to that part too.

    Great work!!!

    Awesome work once again! :)

    Great work.
It could be fun to try my hand it it myself, but I can't think of any suitable games.
...well, perhaps except for Cyberrun - that would benefit great from being all black. :p

    Some candidates I have spotted:

    - Double Dragon 2
    - Eswat
    - Gunrunner
    - Count Duckula
    - Sly Spy
    - Final Fight
    - Soldier of Light

Some of them would need hacking the scroll routine - changing it from pixel scroll to char scroll. And there is of course a problem with multiload games.

If anybody is curious how I did it from the coding point of view, here's my commented hack code :)

What about Scooby Doo? not exactly "black & white", but the fact that the game was all yellow really bugged me back in the day!

also sidewalk might look interesting with a bit of color

I want to remind about Switch Blade ;)

I prefer your new games Ralph, but you're turning into one hell of a hacker! :-D

+3 version has an intro before, it would be better to recolour: ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games/a/AfterTheWar.dsk.zip

This is how Double Dragon 2 would look, it looks like it might be another game that was supposed to be in colour.

    dd2_spec_colour.png

Not sure about my choice of colours but it would work.

    I may have a look at DD2 later :)

It seems to have smooth vertical scroll so it would need corrections.

Btw, Swainy, how's Outrun Europa? :)

I've not touched it since I spoke to you last to be honest mate. I'm working 12 hour shifts so I'm not left with much free time. I'm going to be off for a few weeks soon so I'll try to spend some time on it then.

Spectrum 256 colour. Funnily enough I was playing it last night in response to the Scooby post here. :)

What bugs me in that version is that the circles in the "Scooby Doo" logo are blue and not black. Eek!

    ;)

That's actually the Spectrum version !
I just recolored that using Emuzwin back in the day with the 256 colors overlay.
I have a better version somewhere on one of my backup drives but I don't know where it is......It's been ages since I tried my hand at these, and Emuzwin seems to be no longer updated.......Oh well, at least Ralf's games run on real Spectrums, that's what the community seem to demand around here....:(

No need to be upset, mate :) I believe there quite a lot of people interested in 256 colour games (including me) but they don't make so much noise. They'll just download and play , without commenting.

EmuZWin is a pain in fact. Very unstable, undocumented, may crash in any moment, the most recent versions have bugs... It's a pity as painting games to 256 colours has a great potential which has never been fully realized.

    That looks groovy!

Never really looked at 256 colour games before, as when I've played the SPeccy in the past, it's always been about nostalgia, and having that many colours just didn't seem right..

However, if that's what it ends up looking like but with exactly the same gameplay, these days I'd quite happily give them a bash, as now it's a bit less to do with nostalgia and more about just enjoying the games! Same goes for Ralf's Recolours! Keep 'em all coming I say! :)

I feel so dumb, I didn't even know there was a 256 colour spectrum...

is there a list of the converted games?

It's not a Spectrum. It works only on PC in some special emulators. Some people wouldn't even agree with using the word emulator here ( what machine are we emulating? ) :)

So it's a program ;) which works in some aspects like emulator because it executes Spectrum assembly code from a snapshot but it also uses extra data - 256 colour graphics that are possible to display on PC. It replaces original graphics with these colourful pixels while keeping 100% of the original game mechanics.

These graphics don't appear by magic of course, they are a result of human labour, a rather tedious one.

You can find the games at www.yantragames.com I hope it's okay to give this link.

Rodland would look funky skillo in colour, no idea if it's possible...

I always thought Sinclair/Amstrad missed a trick by not improving the spectrum's colour handling when they upgraded the machine to the 128k models; I'm sure it is what a lot of spectrum gamers wanted.

Those 256 coloured games look very good (however, some of the colouring is dubious - why is the green yama coloured red?)
