Are you using fire to accelerate?

Remember you're not controlling a tank anymore.

i have even tried to shoot the other cars and then put polycrete on the ground.

The same here. Whats the key for accelerate?

I think the default keys are QAOP + Space. You can redefine them.

Space is accelerate, but I think you may have to press Q to start moving forward through the gears, even on automatic.

Ive done the qualifying lap using ZXDS but then came up against multi load and couldn't progress. It was quite good too! If I can get round the loading problem I'll assign a button to break instead of pressing down, which feels all wrong. If I can't get round the multi load... Well after two weeks I should get pretty good on that circuit!

I looked for the original tape on eBay but had no joy. The earlier version from '88 was there in abundance. Not this later Gremlin release though. It's available on plenty of more modern formats though. If all else fails I might take the snes version for a spin... Although that doesnt seem in the spirit of a speccy forum.

Which pc emulator allows you to do the multi-load? I've got real spec I think it's called. I'm not that good with it though. And I doubt the divIDE will have any of it. Infact, it's just shot me a dirty look for even mentioning the idea.

Ha... I mean assign a button to "brake" of course.

    Or...

Oh. The divide seems to work fine!

I picked our man Nigel and set to work qualifying in the rain in South Africa and surprised myself by qualifying in second. Got shunted back a few places at the start of the race itself but made them back really quickly and sailed round the remaining laps letting my finger off the accelerator button when the arrows prompted a corner approaching. Very rarely, I'd use the break... I mean brake.

I am now atop the podium with a jolly tune playing. I'm holding a MASSIVE trophy. So large it doesn't quite fit on the screen. Along side me are Eric Comas who i guess is second because he's punching the air higher than Johnny Herbert. We all have shades on - maybe because it's hot in South Africa despite the rain. I have a moustache. Comas has a stubbly goatee. Herbert has gone for full beard. He must be *boiling*!

Just remembered... I didn't do a pit stop....

I suppose that's why Nigel suffered so many mechanical failures during his career; he kept going for the "break" when it should have been the brake. :)
  • edited July 2012
If only they'd thought to fit him with a "don't break" button. :)

Hmm... I've just tackled Mexico, in the rain again, and despite not knowing the track and really not being very good, I qualified first by a mile and went on to win. I might have to up the difficulty. Again I didn't pit, even though it stopped raining and I was on full wets. Um... Only wets, actually. And even though i missed the start lights going out - I was listening for Mario Kart style beeps - I still passed them all and lead into the first corner.

And it doesn't seem to matter if you drive into other cars or obstacles, rather dangerously put at the side of the track. You just slow down. No apparent damage.

Not a bad driving game...bit hard to see what's going on sometimes! Managed to come 4th in the race I just finished! :)

Like the "whoosh" sound effect in 128k when you pass under a sign....

    Chose spanish track.

The crappy thing is the first time I play this game ever, I get a pole position (1:06:80). Ended 5th in the race.

Never crashed or explode... too easy, I prefer Pole Position! :-)

found the mortar and destroyed all the other cars.

ok. i've managed to move. and how i moved.

tried a single race in south africa. qualified easily, didn't know who i was,
so i didn't understand where i was in the starting grid.
i was trying to understand, and to start the goddamn car, when all the muckin' eleven other cars passed me by.
anyway, i've won the same. so easy. how is it possible.

it's certainly a strange racing game one where you don't explode etc.
but this makes it different. and, anyway, i've seen that's possible to change the level of difficulty. this was the "normal" level.

    Fixed... :p

Well, it's not a bad racing game and I quite enjoyed the first few races, but it's getting a little bit repetitive. I think I'll try to get to the end of the season using snapshots. Only because the codes are really long...

I may be imagining this, but I've got my gears on automatic but I still have to seem to switch them up myself by releasing 'Q' and pressing it again. If I hold fire down on a long straight I only seem to get up to about 4th gear.. :-o

I'm glad that each race only seems to be 3 laps. Has anyone bothered changing their tyres yet?

    Changing tyres? Pit Stops?? WTF???

    Pit Stops?

Morkin, please, don't make it! :-D
  • edited July 2012
I've now tried a pit stop and from a tactical point of view it put me at a huge disadvantage. Firstly, it was difficult to get my car far over enough to the right. I stopped before I could get over. Then I trundled over by degrees and stopped but nothing seemed to be happening. Rather impatiently I tapped fire to accelerate away at the exact moment a dialogue box popped up - so I suspect I simply opted for the same tyres i had just removed - ie Wet. And since I'd pitted to change to DRY tyres I had completely wasted my time!

Finished third in that race - all others so far I have won although I'm not always on pole after qualifying.

I've just finished Monaco. The glitzy street race with yachts and hotels. Alrhough the circuit is accurate, there's none of the detail to distinguish it from any of the previous races. But I was pleased that the long tunnel was present and correct and had a quite exciting overtaking manoeuvre in there! Zoooom!

Amusingly, it doesn't matter what order you place on the podium the picture is the same - just the names change underneath. So first youve got the moustache. Second your the stubbly raised fist man. And third mr full beard with the lower fist pump action.

And my, doesn't it rain a lot in this game.

All this said, I like it. It's good. I must up the difficulty though. It should make the races quite exciting, I hope.

You're not wrong about the rain. It's like every race is taking place in the UK.

I seem to be quite good at finishing 3rd (there always seem to be 2 way ahead of the pack).... But wait a minute....

    ...Just hold on a sec....

    ...Yes, I believe....

    win.jpg

I'm no longer propping up the podium, I won a race..! That's me there in the middle! :-) Hovering, David Blaine-like above the ground..!

I always seem to be able to catch up a lot more easily on the bends, not so good on the straights.

I've just got up to Monaco but haven't raced it yet. Might leave it till the weekend for a treat.

Those drivers on the podium look like Russian Cossack dancers!

Had a wee shot of this earlier.

It's one of those games that has aged really badly, I think. The instructions are promising with lots of proper motorsport features like tyre wear but the game itself is too slow and jerky and the graphics are a bit fuzzy. Possibility of a bit of fun being eked out of it if I can get used to cornering and using the map but I see this as an example of "best left in the past" to be honest.

Just had 2 pretty good games on this, both on the "Britain" track. Qualified 4th and finished 3rd place on my first go, then Qualified 3rd and placed 2nd. Yeah, I'm happy with that.

If this game is on for another week then I'll start a season.
i'm more on the graz side.
    You chose wisely. ;)

I've just finished Germany, race 10 of the season of 16. I'm now totally used to the slow frame rate and can really pan it round corners. For hairpins a little tap on the brakes is usually enough and finding the racing line gets you out in the lead.

I've changed tyres tactically and won, which was very gratifying. It was raining in Canada then stopped shortly into lap one. I changed to softs. The simple selection was ridiculously sluggish! I then was forced to sit there for ages while the two speedy ones whizzed past but with my new tyres I screamed up behind them.

I accidentally started the German grand prix on softs when it was raining so only qualified 3rd. I can now see the game mechanics a bit more regarding hitting other cars. If you're not leading and hitting the car in front stops you dead you get shuffled back. So you're forced to at least attempt to overtake. Anyway. It stopped raining immediately and cos I was accidentally on softs I won by a mile. Tactical genius!

I have still not managed to wear my tyres out. Even during the twisty German track or Silverstone. Those 4 tyres on the right though. Do they get increasingly "spotty", signalling tyre wear? Maybe they'll blow up on a higher difficulty? I
    Hope so!

I agree it's dated but despite it's flaws it does play very well once you get used to it. Overtaking, or nailing a chicane, can still be exhilarating. I'm reminded of V Rally at times. Seat of your pants stuff!

...I take it everyone's a bit bored of this one now?

Not a bad game, but I haven't really got the enthusiasm to keep going with it. I might try to finish the season at least..

It's funny how these games have been working out, Jungle Fever has probably provided the biggest laugh for me so far, despite the fact that it's a really simple game.

No, not bored. Just got a lot on and a head full of non-fun stuff to contend with.
Haven't started my season, but I plan to, maybe at the weekend now.
