It's a couple of weeks old now (I think) is this news story, but it's one that I feel is worth mentioning. Sony have anounced that the VITA will act as a PS3 controller just like the upcoming one for thw WiiU!

I wonder where they get these ideas from

To be fair to Sony, integration between the PS3 and Vita has been on the table ever since the latter was launched in Japan last year.

That said, given that hardly anyone's been buying it, perhaps bundling one with every PS3 sold would be the way to go.

If sony were really switched on they'd scrap the Vita and integrate the PS3 with their smart phones. Smart phones are very powerful now and have impressive GPU capabilities, multicore CPUs, gyroscopes, cameras and capacitive touch input.

I thought the VITA compatibility was planned from day one, as I remember chuckling to myself, about Sony saying something along the lines of the VITA synching with the PS3 for 3D controller action, and baring in mind that you have to buy a PS3 and a VITA to do it, probably still costing you the fat end of $600, when the Wii-U will do all that for under half the price (Well providing Nintendo stick with the planned launch price of about $250 anyway?).

I'd think the thing with the Vita is that it's got a plethora of control options including all of the above, plus those of a conventional gamepad, so it's something that could easily be made to work well with existing PS3 games, as well as adding new features, rather than needing everything to be re-designed from scratch.

Sony did have a half-hearted dabble at a gaming smartphone with the Xperia Play, although that's not exactly fared any better than the Vita so they're probably in no hurry to integrate it. Still, maybe when its inevitable successor comes along they'll have another bash.

Yeah, but not as a touch screen tablet on your lap.

You could argue that Nintendo are just copying a lot of the "remote play" stuff Sony did with the PSP. I'm not a fan of Sony but the PS3/Vita combination is a lot more attractive to me than the Wii U one.
