Unofficial or inspired games in Infoseek

edited September 2012 in Infoseek database
When looking for games from a determined company, the unofficial or inspired games also appear in the search, making it appear a bit odd...

Would it be possible that when doing a search, these unofficial games wouldnt appear in the results?

Thanks Martijn ;)

    This is not currently possible.

Rather than creating features nobody else might have a need for, perhaps if you could tell me what you are trying to do that would need this, I might find a different solution for you (or it would just end up on the infamous to-do list...)

No, its more a "beautifying" request, let me explain:

I use Infoseek to look for all the games from Dinamic. In the search I also obtain 2 games, "Existenz" and "Justin" that were not from Dinamic at all...they were just 2 games with a Dinamic game inspiration.
That thing, when doing a search and obtaining a list, looks awkward and also may lead to wrong information for people who are not very well aware.

I dont know if I explained myself clearly, I hope so! :)

    Dank je!

Okay, I see what you mean.

However... any such change would just be another tick-box in the advanced engine, as that's the only place where more sophisticated searches can be made.
Since you speak of people who are not very well aware, complicating the advanced search page yet further would seem a contradiction...

No, I mean that there might be, for example, people not aware that "Justin" is not a Dinamic game (It even actually sounds similar to "Dustin", and then take that information as correct, when its not. :)

As for me, its more a case of accuracy, Im looking for Dinamic games, games made by Dinamic, I dont want any game not programmed by them appear in the list.

    Cheers!

Understood, but you may want to read again what I actually said in my previous post. :-)

Perhaps we just disagree, which is also acceptable!

Hehe, maybe I was thinking that the solution would be getting rid of the inspired games in the result of the search, and I think that would make things much easier in all ways (and also simple and accurate). No need to complicate the engine, methinks :)

Aaaaahaaa! You mean to drop such references from the standard engine instead of the advanced one!
I completely missed that idea, sorry.

Since this is a fundamental change, I would like to hear of more people interested in this, as everyone will be getting a different experience once this is implemented (so a single person asking this should not be enough).

I fear there is not a lot of people reading us here... :(

why games inspired by coin ops such as space invaders haven't a major clone list on their own?

To be listed as a major clone, at least 25 clones must be present.

I see Ivan's point. Spectrum fanatics may know right away which titles were not released by the original company, but anyone else (new fans, researchers, etc.) may be mislead and even include wrong information when talking about a certain company. If someone searches for all games by <insert company here>, the unnoficial or inspired ones should not appear on that list by default. They should only appear when using the advanced search and ticking a box. The box would read something like "Also include unofficial or inspired titles".

But then again, I haven't used Infoseek to search for all games by a company, so I can't judge the way it works now.

I think this sounds very sensible. Shame on you! :)
