Reading TR-Dos disks on XP?

edited September 2012 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
I've trekked through the web in search of a tool to get a physical TRD disk into a .trd file - with no success. It's hard to tell if my floppies are just too old and rusty, or the utilities (and the user!) are to blame.

So.. can anyone recommend a TRDos uility for Windows XP that ideally is in English, and is straightforward to use?

I recommend to do auto-booting flash drive with DOS and use old low-level utilities ( http://vtrdos.ru/pcutilz.php ). There is also XP utitilies, but I never was able to get them to work correctly.

SAMdisk supports TRD images and works under Windows 2000 or later. As with all non-DOS formats, you need a traditional (non-USB) floppy drive.

To read floppy into image: SAMdisk a: image.trd
To write image back to floppy: SAMdisk image.trd a:

Fantastic! SAMdisk does the job, after trying a handful of other utilities that failed in indecipherable ways. So far, I've discovered two things:

    1) I password protected my disks (with a Sinclair BASIC boot file!)
    2) The only readable disks have nothing but games on them
