I want to be a light-house keeper...

</self pity mode>

For a good few weeks now, I've had almost no time to myself (which is why I never got to the Speccy show, and why I've not yet tried Black Mesa ), and as usual in these cases I've been daydreaming of my ideal life, as a light-house keeper.

Granted a light-house keeper isn't most people's dream job - I'd imagine most people would choose to be a professional footballer, or king, or be the first person to land on Mars, but for me looking after a light-house would be ideal, as (a) you get lots of time to yourself (and I'm well behind on my reading, gaming, and watching torrented TV programs and films), and (b) there's. no. commuting. to. work. in. a lighthouse. Well, there is to get to the lighthouse initiially, but when you get there you live there for a fortnight or three months or however long your shift is, so for most days you roll out of bed and you're in work! Bliss. Especially since the 'work' is basically just checking the big light up top is working.

Alright, so there's downsides, such as shipwrecks, having to climb down then up five hundred stairs every time you want something from the kitchen, and most of the people you meet will smell of fish and go "Arrrr!" before beginning every sentence, but don't spoil the fantasy - for me, the life of a light-house keeper would be idyllic.

Anyway, that's my dream job, what's yours?

I won't mention 'automated lighthouses' then - that could just ruin someone's day...
Here, take some time out. Build one of these. It actually works!

I'd go for something like this. I like the idea of a useful, easy job, preferably part time, low pressure and allows plenty of time for tea breaks/thinking and skiving. I think one has to be careful what one wishes for in a dream job however, as a lot of us are pre-programmed to get bored and find the flaws in whatever we end up doing. Ho hum.

(oh go on then, part time zx spectrum games programmer/designer :-D)

You want to live in a giant fish smelling penis that can be seen for miles around?

That pretty much describes my working life, except when I roll out of bed I just have to cross the landing to my office, and instead of changing big light bulbs I do programming (well, programming interspersed with Facebook, IRC, forum-ing, reading, and, this week, Black Mesa :) ).

    Already got it!

I stayed out of the tractor thread cos' it genuinely didn't interest me. I read it when I saw the little padlock on it.

Just as well I stayed out of it though :D

Who would've thunk that a thread about tractors would end up getting locked....hilarious

If ewgf ever lands a lighthouse job, it will probably get attacked by some Combine soldiers and airships just like in HL? ...

Though I respect that a lot, I'd be fired if that were my job.

Ewgf, I found something for you:

Seriously though, if a Lighthouse can be used as storage... it would be the ideal place for a large Sinclair collection! Add internet access, enough food or option to get deliveries, a decent restroom, TV, bed and voila. No one would see a certain specchum again!

Every once in a while there are these odd jobs listed, where a milli-billionaire needs some stoic person with a Daniel Boone syndrome to take care of their tropical island somewhere way out in the ... err ... whichever farthest of the seven seas.

Maybe that's something more up your alleyway?

PS. Those islands usually come equipped with an Internet connection.

Yeah and an underground laboratory containing a giant death ray, or perhaps a missile silo? :D
