Ever had coincidental meetings with anyone far away?

Something like this :

Earlier this year we went to an amusementpark. I live in 200 away from my brother and yet we met eachother in that park.

Last week I met an old player of my basketballclub in a village 160 km from our mutual town were we played ball. We both have moved that same distance from our old town.

When I lived in Houston, I had a half share in an elderly aircraft with a friend of mine. I went to the airfield one day and the line guy told me "Oh someone from your neck of the woods has just been in, said he was from the Isle of Man" - so I tell the line guy, give him my phone number and tell him to call, and we'll go flying. The guy never came in again though.

About two years later, I had moved back and had got on a "Visit ATC" trip at Ronaldsway airport. We were just chatting away and the air traffic controller who was giving the tour said, "Oh, I visited Houston a couple of years back, went to this small airfield and the line guy said there was someone from your neck of the woods who has a share in a Cessna 140 here", I said - yeah, I know, that "someone" was me :-)

Went on holiday to Majorca a few years ago and bumped into someone from work in one of the English pubs.

    Small world.

'coincidental meeting' is always a good excuse if you are caught stalking

    I forget a few:

On a holiday I met a guy from my neighbourhood in a town 150 km away.

On another holiday some guys from the neighbourhood were at the same camping.

Also in the same town mentioned in the first addition I had a meeting from the "tall people club". I met a 'new' guy. He said his name and I said, I know, I bought your clublicense to play basketball when you stopped!
( I played under his old number ).

Encouraged by the family tree thread, I took a completely new approach in searching for a removed cousin called Sieb. The amazing find of this evening truly gives me the feeling that I met him! The distance is not in miles but in years...

well, I often run into bikers I know, but I guess it's more of a statistical probability, as we tend to go to the same roadside cafes and meeting points.

I was in portaventura theme park in August near salou , sat in the Shambala rollercoaster , they have a fast queue thing and as we sat down , 2 people were waved through to sit next to us , one of them was a chap i'd not seen since 1987 when we did paper rounds together in Chorley (i moved to Lancaster , he's still in sunny chorley) , we spoke for about 20 mins after .

    I've had a couple.

First was when I moved to Houston I was walking through the Galleria (a mall) and physically bumped into someone...looked up and it was one of my old customers from my last job in Manchester.

2nd was in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky...a tiny town with one bar. I was working for Compaq at the time and had been sent there with a couple of other guys to work at Lexmark in Louisville and we drove out to this place for dinner (re: Got lost and ended up in the one horse town).

So I sat at the bar and said 'hi' to the guy sitting next to me and he came back with a Manchester accent 'hello', turned out he had lived 2 miles from where I did and knew many of the same people.

Moral of the story: You can't hide. :D
  • Kinda on the same theme...

There's a chap I got to know from down the pub and a few weeks on he finds out my surname and asks if I'm related to a guy he knows. Turns out he was talking about my cousin and, as a nipper, he used to go and visit him on the farm where my cousin grew up. I was there a lot and probably played footie with him and had loads of near-fatal accidents messing about with farming machinery together

Thing is, neither of us remember each other.

In 2005 before I moved here, and way before I was married, my wife was staying at the Marrott Apartment building in Indianapolis when we were still just boyfriend and girlfriend. I was visiting, and cigarette smoke almost makes my wife physically throw up, she's got really bad asthma as well so if I'm smoking outside it is.

So I got the lift downstairs, and went out the side door of the ground floor of her building, there were offices in the basement of the building, and a fella who worked in them smoked, him and his mate were outside, can't remember if my lighter broke, or his lighter broke, or maybe he just said hello to me. But it resulted at one point me saying "Alreet!" to him.

He freaked out in a comical fashion "OH! MY GOD! Are you a Geordie????? :o", I was like "Er? Aye". He's like "My Mom is from Gateshead oh my god! I never thought I'd ever meet someone else from there!!!!". Then continued the typical "Newcastle United....Football, not Soccer" type bollox....and so on :D

On a flight to Bahrain, sitting next to a nice girl - we got chatting....

We were both going to a Gulf Air compound - she was from Wolverhampton & I was from Walsall....

Chatting some more, we compared journeys.....

In 18 months, we did Bahrain - Birmingham and back 3 times
Bahrain - Hong Kong - Austrailia - Bahrain - Birmingham at one point.

Every time, we were on the same flights... this was around 1992 and we are still friends.

Yesterday my family went to "Doe Maar" in Arnhem in a footballstadium.

30,000 visitors and we walked around and met Emile Roemer, now party leader of the dutch Socialist Party and still inhabitant of our village and we know eachother for years.

So the odds are, assuming that he would visit the concerts

    1/120.000 to meet him

    (4 concerts each 30.000 visitors)
