Paul Mckenna 2

edited April 2005 in Games
I can't be bothered reading all the Paul Mckenna posts so I'll start a new thread

Are any of the games he's denied any good?

Namely: Arc of Yesod, Nodes of Yesod and Robin of the Wood ;).

I liked Crosswize. It was better than the first part, Sidewize.

I've never really liked the Odin games but i can understand that Nodes of Yesod was a good game, just never got into it myself.

The only company who dont give their games out for download who i really care about is Ultimate. Codemasters i was never a fan of, theres been a few new companies who have now allowed distribution of their games but most of these are no names who the majority of us arent that fussed about.

I'm not too gutted Odin have suddenly said no to their games. Robin O the Wood was quite good though. If someone like US Gold or Imagine/Ocean did that then it would be disasterous

At the end of the day theres plenty of Eastern European sites offering these games out so i'm not too worried.

But Arc/Nodes of Yesod are very similar to games from Ultimate (e.g. Sabre Wulf, Underwurlde especially).

And some Western European sites too ;).

In my opinion, yes. ICUPS was OK, Sidewize and Crosswize good, Heartland, Nodes of Yesod and Arc of Yesod were great. But my all-time Odin favourite is Robin of the wood.
I doubt I'll shed a tear for the likes of Jack and the beanstalk or Hypaball, though.

Heartland remains my favourite speccy game of all time. Beautiful game, possibly the best looking that I've ever seen on a speccy. It's just a pity that fewer people may get to see it now.

I wouldnt worry about that, if someone can use search engines they'll find it online whatever. If they cant find it using a search engine they dont deserve to know where it is ! ;)

Even if somehow McKenna shuts down every Speccy game site from hosting it theres still tons of Speccy cd's on ebay etc. Near impossible to stop everything.

Still, on the plus side I'm sure we've all got the Odin, Ultimate and Codies files anyway. So that's nice.

Its funny you should mention the similarity between Odin and Ultimate.

    Please See :-

Thor became Odin Computer Graphics (O.C.G.) for three key reasons:

    All games to be produced in-house, a new start and break with the past;

Odin wanted to be mistaken for Ashby Computer Graphics (A.C.G.), or "Ultimate Play the Game" as they were commonly known, as much as possible; [Crash once described them as "would-be Ultimates"]

Thor had a bad reputation for very poor quality software.

    tsk,tsk,tsk... no,no,no Mr.McKenna.

"[...] We were totally unmanaged: there was no proper management structure in place, the strategy/sense of purpose was vacuous (it was to make Paul McKenna rich), there was no resourcing of projects, no proper plans or design, no clear measurable objectives and milestones (deadlines), no clear roles within the company (except Paul McKenna was in charge), no responsibilities or accountabilities, the initial teamwork (that created successes like Nodes and Robin) died out, there was no communication from Paul McKenna or between programmers, [...]"

If that's all true then it suggests he's a very poor businessman. As is often the case in these scenarios, it was probably the talent that triumphed over poor management leading to Odin's success.

I've had an idea for this year's Crap Game Contest, if anyone wants to take it up:

It would/will be a text adventure (Quilled, if that's allowable, so as to guarantee that it's crap ;) ) called Arse of Ycod, and about a bricklayer-turned-hypnotist called Ken McPaula, who wants to claim ownership of the entire Speccy back catalogue despite having never in his life written a line of code. :)

    How about it?

Hey! Someone noticed that the WhoTheFcukIsJohnLennonOrWhatever tread was locked? :( Did our "beloved" finally read it and couldnt bear the truth so he made the wos close it? Or did he hypnotise someone to do so? :)
  • edited March 2005
No, the thread lock was long overdue and the discussion wasn't going anywhere really. :)

As for whether Odin games were good: I really liked Heartland. Had one of the best title tunes I've heard on the Speccy as well as some of the most colourful graphics. The gameplay wasn't bad either but I found it a bit on the tough side to get very far in it.

Is this the REAL Paul McKenna, hypnotist extraordinaire. we're talking about here??!!
  • edited March 2005
Yep exactly the same one, an impressionist and also an ex Speccy games programmer

I dunno about the impressionist fact (is he the one and the same, really?) but i don't think he was a programmer of any sort. He was in some other industry (details elude me ATM) entirely before he started Odin, IIRC.

Sorry Arjun i was being sarcastic before, its not the same person at all, obviously same name but thats all.

Its just that i think it was mentioned ages ago when the original Paul McKenna thread was brought up so now when someone said the same thing a few months later i couldnt resist but to say it was !

He obviously doesnt have the time to go through the original 14 page thread to find out it wasnt the same person and i dont blame him ! I bet the Odin 'Paul McKenna' must get so fed up of people asking him that everytime he rings up a bank or a shop etc. I still laugh at the thought of names such as Phil McCracken, Wayne Kerr and Richard Head ringing up places but thats just my poor juvenile humour.

I obviously am a numbskull for having missed the sarcasm completely! McFadden has addled my brains is the only defense I can put forth. ;)

Don`t forget Jenny Taylor who pops up on many CBBC and cITV (SMTV, MOM etc)phone-ins.

My most favourite game from Odin/Thor was definitely Heartland. I remember it like it was only yesterday...
Bout 8 years ago, I found it on a tape. I was astonished only by the title music. Also the guy walking and throwing his hat was great. But I didnt remember the name of the game. Later we were deleting "Tape loading Error" progs from tapes. It was pure luck that I loaded this game from the tape I was going to re-write & stopped me from deleting it. I dont play the game much today (thanks to our beloved hypnotist :) ), but I made at least a Midi song as a tribute to one of my most favourite game on the speccy. You can find it here:
