If the break cable goes through a cover then maybe some waters got inside and its gone a bit rusty. i.e. its nothing to do with the brake itself.

    I get this occasionally.

Unhinge the cable from the break to loosen it.
As its now loose you can remove the cable/cover from where its attached to the frame. Spray wd40 down the cover and move it up and down the now loose cable spreading it around.

Thanks mate. This is all useful info, I'll definitely be consulting this thread in future before going near halfords if it all goes pete wrong again

So what was the outcome of Halfords saying there were nowt wrong with it?

You may even just need to retension your brake cables (which tbh can be a pain in the arse, especially if you have Cantelever or Vanguard brakes), the numpties at Halfords are probably pulling them too tight when they try to fix them. You do want them tight so you stop properly, but having Arnie wrive them through the loop while somebody else tightens the screw up is just ridiculous.

I used to build and fix my own BMXs all the time (A lack of cash and an expensive hobby will force you to get savvy with the technical side of things), I know it's not much help but if I had the bike in front of me I could probably sort it. But I'm a spaz when it comes to explaining things, unless I'm doing it as I'm explaining.

It probably is something simple though, and let's face it people who work in bike shops are there to sell them to you (and rip you off whenever possible). Every chain bike store is usually clueless, try going into a chain and asking for a Standard Axle, they'll come out with some piece of sh*t that costs about 3 quid and will implode the second you put any pressure on it, but only after they've asked you what type of bike it's for. Then you have to explain that you mean Standard the company, and that those axles cost about 15 quid and are virtually indestructible. Usually unless the place sells a lot of BMX bikes they'll probably turn round and tell you they've never heard of them.

    Muppets! :D

So they go out the back and return 15 minutes later with a back axle off a triumph herald? :)

going back tomorrow to get it. maybe they've mixed my bike up with someone else's though because it was un-rideable yesterday. No idea what's going on tbh. If its fixed then fair enough, but I'm sceptical.

    I'll air-mail it over to you :-D

Picked my bike up. only got charged ?4.50 which I couldn't be bothered to contest (somehow last time for the same problem it was ?17.50?). Rode back home, and all the way there was a weird clicking noise coming from the back wheel that I can't figure out. My brother's told me his mate is a bike expert so ill let him have a look. One things for sure,it ain't going back to halfords  given up with them...

Haha! When I went home last year my ma still has our can of that under the kitchen sink. That can of oil was my grandads, it's practically and heirloom now

I think my grandad bought it in about 1973
