windows 8 !!!!!!!!

edited December 2012 in Chit chat
I've just tried windows 8 on a new laptop, and I hate it already !
You're not supposed to close windows anymore, just keep opening new ones and windows looks after things.
Internet explorer doesn't seem to have a home button.
There's no easy way to shut down windows, you just shut the lid. What happens on a desktop ?
There seems to be 2 main screens, a tiled thing and a basic desktop.
The first thing I tried was the calendar from the tiled screen. It said if you don't have a microsoft account, go get one and try again. I cancelled, then took 10 minutes working out how to close this screen and get back to a desktop.
What a nightmare.
Maybe after I view a few win8 tutorial vids it'll all make sense, but at the moment its horrible........

Alt+F4 doesn't work as expected in some Metro apps. Some things can only be closed by clicking the top to drag them down, some require a lot of right-clicking in corners. Some things are hidden and require a lot of clicks to get there, or key combinations as shortcuts when possible.

I can use it, but it's not intuitive at all, especially for older people.

Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.

I've got a copy of DOS 1.0 somewhere. I don't recall how big (or small) it is zipped, but I do remember that it has no support for hard disks or directories. It's great.

I have played with windows 8 computers on and off and every time I just shook my head in disbelief.

What is this whole thing of not allowing apps to be closed from within the app or its window any more, it started on mobile OSes and now is on the desktop.

I though the main overriding constraint of all programmers was to minimise use of memory resources, processor time and system power. Apart from a small increase in the time needed to bring the app into view and have it interactive, what's the point of this it consumes resources, increases the amount the OS has to manage and overtime could slow things down to the point where a reboot is needed, its just plain odd.

Ditched Windows for Linux once I saw the state of Windows Vista - The only reasons I need to have Windows (XP) on my hard-disk at all now are FS2004 and my EPROM programmer's software.

Better play it safe and send a portable hard drive. Even the 2TB ones are going pretty cheap nowadays.

Start8 (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/index.asp) is worth a look. It restores the start button and goes straight into the desktop after login. There are free alternatives like ClassicShell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/). I tried this out last month, but didn't find it as smooth as Start8.

I'm also running 8GadgetPack (http://8gadgetpack.bplaced.net/) to restore the gadgets.

Now I've got these two installed I don't mind dipping in and out of Metro for the odd thing. But I feel really P'd off at being forced there in the first place. What would have been so bad about leaving the start button as an option, and replacing gadgets with some form of live tile? (Actually I'll need to google that and see if anyone's released a program yet!)

Oh yeah, Amigakit works with WinUAE. I actually forgot about WinUAE, that was my emulator of choice when I had WB3.5 on the PC :D

I wish I'd had the money for an AmigaOne and OS4.0. I've seen them running and the speed was absolutely stunning. A cold boot was faster than XP waking from hibernation!

I think I've got Dos 6.0 and Win 3.11 on CD somewhere. They're a right laugh to go back to

Lol that's what I meant, but yep, it is ironic.
I'm sure Triumph of the Nerds covered some of these 'industrial thefts' quite extensively. Need to rewatch that.

Uninstall Windows 8, and ask for money back for the licence, then buy Win 7.

I didn't like Vista at first because of all changes. However, I was forced to get used to it because it was on my work laptop. I recently upgraded my home PC to Win 7, which I really like because I was used to Vista and knew where everything was. Win 7 seems loads better than XP so far.

Windows 8 looks like everything has changed again. I think it is just a case of perseverance! I have seen a couple of demos of Win 8 on YouTube and it look pretty good to me - for tablets anyway.

And there lies the problem. They're so concerned with tablets and voice control that they've forgotten about the everyday desktop users.

I know you can switch between the Metro and classic interfaces, but to be set as Metro by default is stupid. It's also like they're trying to give you less control over windows.

Is there anyone here that likes Windows 8? I say that because you usually get one passionate individual that defends something like this to the hilt.

Personally I believe that MS should have done is updated the OS, but made the Metro UI available as an extra that can be turned on or off.

Or just possibly sold two flavours of OS. I guess this is there attempt to pull users into its metro UI and thus off the back of it encourage users to get the tablet and mobile devices too.

I'm beginning to be won over to Mac now, primarily because with each update comes new features, but they don't mess with the UI too much because they know if it works don't fix it or if you can't improve on what's there allready don't change it.

Warning to all purchasers of a Computer bundled with Windows 8: If you want to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro: This will not work because the serial number is stored in the UEFI BIOS. So if you remove Win 8 and install Win 8 Pro, it still installs as non-Pro version!!! Installation of Windows 7 is not affected.

Like, yes. Defend, hell no! They should have done exactly this and made the metro interface optional. Start8 fixes the start button. Once there's an app that puts live tiles on the desktop we have what Windows 8 should be. If they'd done that from day one I suspect we'd have all been singing it's praises given the price.
