Best 2D PS1 Games?

edited November 2012 in Chit chat
What are the best 2D and 2D-esque games for the PS1? And by 2D-esque, I mean games like R Type Delta, where although the graphics are 3D, they play like a 2D game.

    Pandemonium 1 & 2 - 2D platformers in 3D clothing, both excellent.
G-Darius was another excellent shooter, again 3D styled but played in 2D.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night - Best Castlevania game ever ;)

Can't think of any more off-hand, I played mostly RPG's on the PS1, and they tended to play in 3D/Isometric perspectives...

Abe's Oddysee, followed by Abe's Exoddus - utterly stunning pre-rendered animations in a 2D platform adventure.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile looks good, using 3D characters, but supposedly plays a bit simple and short.

  • Yeah, the Abe games are brilliant. I quite liked Pandemonium too.

    What about Klonoa or Tomba?

I was gonna suggest them aswell. They're working on HD remakes of them for PS3/360.

    Brilliant games.

Here's early footage of the HD version:
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I don't mind who knows it I'm a Nintendo fan-boy, and it really bugs me that the best ever Castlevania game was on Playstation, and I've never even played a Castlevania game. Perhaps I need upgrading to zealot.

Abe's Odyssey was superb. A proper 'thinker' in a world when games were fast becoming dull and samey. I may have to break out the PS1 and have another go at it.

What was great about Abe was that the animations were snapped to block positions across the screen, which immediately removed all the faff with pixel-perfect positioning. And yet it did it all so smoothly you wouldn't really notice. It did have some lovely stereo sound effects though too, where you could hear the sound off approaching off-screen guards, or even hidden screens off the side of the current level.

I love the look of that HD remake, but I hope they fix that lurchy scrolling before it's released.

You can get the entire Parodius series for the PS1, and all of them are awesome, but bloody hard.

Harmful Park is a very good but not so well known shooter for the PS1 (Japan only, so unless you've got a chip or smartcard for your PS1, or a decent emulator you ain't playing it).

As for awesome 2D games how's about all the 2D fighters (Although all the Capcom ones for the PS1 are actually better on the Saturn).

Also there's plenty of old stye RPG games and rereleases of old RPG's in glorious 2D topdown view! May I recommend Lunar Silver Star Story and Lunar Eternal Blue (basically cos' I've just finished one and am playing the other right now :D).

Oh and Symphony of the Night was better on the Saturn as well btw, the castle had the full map, the PS1 versio has a whole section, a couple of items, a boss, and a small chunk of story missing from what I understand (Not much use anyway unless you read Japanese though).
    Every night is curry night!
