In August 1990 I bought my copy of Laser Squad from a Wolverhampton distributor, Software City. At that time, the only way for the vast majority of Italian Spectrum users to legally purchase software was mail order, and just a handful of titles were imported by local distributors (like SoftMail). Paradoxically, even when burdened by shipping costs and taxes for international money transfer through the mail service, most of the times it was cheaper to purchase it from UK-based discount sellers. (I wrote some lines about this in the seventh chapter of the Spectrumpedia, the one dedicated to the Spectrum in Italy.)
I remember ordering Elite from the local market stall trader, and cycling down there at 6 am the next saturday to get it. Had to wait for him to turn up! Was well disappointed that he hadn't managed to source it.
Got it later that week at WHSMiths.
Never did the mail-order thing. Way too scary for an almost teen :)
