Keys in the middle of the keyboard not working.

edited January 2013 in Hardware
Have just (mostly) successfully carried out the composite mod, but as the title says the middle two columns of keys of my rubber keyed issue 3 48K spectrum have stopped working. They worked fine before I started so I'm guessing I've scratched a connection somewhere. I've tried gently removing and reseating the connectors - no difference.

To be more precise the keys that don't work are :5,6,T,Y,G,H,V and B. If it was just the odd key I'd suspect the membrane itself.

There are 2 places where the keyboard ribbons meet the motherboard - does anyone know where I need to be looking to find the connection that's probably gone?

It will be the membrane, it almost always is, try snipping a bit off the end with scissors and try again, sometimes that can fix it, other than that head on over to www.rwapsoftware.co.uk and order a brand new one

If you inspect the keyboard ribbons, especially the one with 5 lines, you might find a crack.
In my case they always appeared in the places where it bends.
Either in the area where it exits the keyboard, or where it is connected to the board.

Fully agree with the previous speakers - throw out the membrane! Also take a torch and inspect the two sockets for broken bits/crumbs of the brittle membrane.

    Thanks for the help guys!

I've tried trimming the ribbons a little with no success, looks like I probably am going to need a new membrane. I'll have a look see if there are any obvious cracks later on.

A bit of a shame really as thanks to the composite mod I now have the most perfect picture (It's way better on my LCD TV than I get from using RGB scart cables on my grey +2)!

But obviously 8 of the keys don't work! Thanks again for the suggestions.
