Lottery ticket price to go up to ?2

edited January 2013 in Chit chat
Prizes to change as follows:

? Price of a Lotto line will increase from ?1 to ?2 in the autumn
? Prize for matching three numbers will rise from ?10 to ?25
? Prize pot for matching five numbers will drop by ?500 to ?1,000
? Reward for matching five numbers and the bonus number will halve to ?50,000
? Prize for matching four numbers will increase from ?60 to ?100

The average Saturday jackpot will increase from around ?4.1 million to ?5 million, the Wednesday jackpot will increase from an estimated ?2.2 million to around ?2.5 million.

I hardly play it at the moment, only occasional Lucky Dips or when times see tough and it seems buying a 'tax for stupid people' ticket is the best chance I have of improving my lot! This price hike will probably stop me playing altogether.

only played about two or three times ever. got put off by the fact that I didn't win the jackpot immediately.

my old boss used to do 50 goes on the lottery, and buy 50 scratchcards every week. spose he might cut that down to a mere 25 now

Blimey! I've only ever done it two or three times ever too.
?100 a week must be classed as having "a problem"!?!

yeah it was quite sad , he used to keep the scratchcards in a little elastic band and do them when there was a quiet moment. he'd get the odd 3 number wins on the main lottery, never saw him get more than a tenner in a week iirc

I still think they should increase the lower end prizes a great deal more as this would get people more interested, they certainly get enough money in to cover it.Maybe because they see the euro is popular (at ?2) they think the normal lotto could get away with it too.I do not play scratch cards but admit i did a few times when they released the pacman ones,i still have them somewhere and the scans i made of them too lol.

i wouldn't put on in someones card though, id be gutted if they won.

they picked a bad time to up it.. I used to smoke.. and well paying for that is far less, so I don't mind. most I've won is ?300 on the euro though (and that week 1 more number was ?937k :( )

I do ok, get a few wins here / there, as then it looks like I paid half the cost of the ticket etc.

I always find it interesting the thing with poverty programmes and they always smoking. Until you give up you realise ... damn I just might as well have been lighting ?50 notes.

    I don't do scratch cards.

although I hear there are fruit machines in betting shops that are like crack for gamblers. around here I'd not go into a betting shop as it's full of boozers standing outside and blocking up the pavement and begging money sometimes.

never set foot in a betting shop but I did used to be quite badly addicted to fruit machines for about a year. I was clueless about them until a mate told me how to play them then you realise they're all basically the same... it was only when I bumped into an old school mate in a pub one afternoon and watched him sink over ?50 into the machine there without even batting an eyelid that I realised how stupid they were. still occasionally get tempted when I spy one but always resist now. most I ever won was ?60 off a quid

Last year I decided to experiment with the ?5 scratch cards - odds of 3.8:1, "14 chances to win", etc. - so I've been buying one a month - and have won absolutely nothing at all. Similarly with my occasional purchase of a National Lottery or Health Lottery ticket - not one penny in winnings for over two years. At ?2 a ticket I won't be buying any more NL tickets, so I'll stick with buying the occasional HL ticket - until they go up to ?2.

Did it on the very first lottery, convinced I was going to win, didnt, never played it again!

    Lotto is a stupid name.

I don't understand how most of them work now.

    There are two many draws.

I miss the one draw on a Saturday night.

I have not bought a lottery ticket in years, partly as i decided it was a waste of money, and partly as I lost interest, I liked just the one Satuday night draw, and usually spent a quid just to be part of it, watch the telly etc

Considering it's supposed to be a recession, no-one has any money, etc. Online gambling seems to be booming if the number of companies all buying flashy prime time adverts is anything to go by.

People must be pouring money away into these things, it's depressing.

I remember a friend of mine bought 30 scratch cards in one go back in the 90's believing he was bound to at least break even. He won 2 x ?1 and when he went to exchange it i bought a card on a whim to test out the "loser lottery" theory and low and behold i won ?100.

If you've never heard of the loser lottery its a kind of manipulation of sods law where you find a gambler who is losing badly and then gamble near them and for some reason most of the time you will win almost like the cosmos is rubbing it in.
