Dizzy Vs Egghead

edited January 2013 in Games
Why two egg heroes on speccy? (I'm sure there must be a story about it).

and since I never played any of the games, where should I start?

  • I think Dizzy came about because an oval shape was easy to draw. Egghead is obviously a tribute and the star of Chuckie Egg is not the eggs!

I don't have much to add except that I prefer the Egghead games any day. They're well-made platform games. What's not to love. :)

I never liked Dizzy one bit. At all.
They're technically eggcellently made though, but very different types of games so it wouldn't be fair to compare them to each other.

...that's not to say that Egghead can't be an homage to Dizzy, though.

I wouldn't compare the first 3 Eggheads to the first 3 Dizzy's. But I prefer Egghead 4, and 5 as platform arcade adventures to anything past the 3rd Dizzy game.

To me Egghead 4 and 5 really put the fun back into fetch em' ups. Good music, good graphics, silly story, challenging without being annoying, and most importantly fun.

Dizzy 1,2, and 3 I love, 4 is OK, but 5, 6, 7, 8, 12000, and so on really put the annoyingness, frustration, and drudgery back into a genre that was already quite watered down.

  • Then there's Hamte Damte. So it seems speccy developers were obsessed with eggs. Eggs and miners. With the miners strike going on in the eighties it's not surprising they appear in so many games. The egg situation is a little more confusing.

I was going to mention Hamte Damte, but it's a bit crap :D

As other has said eggs are easy to draw and rotate even if they are made just of a few pixels.

As for Dizzy and Egghead they are a bit different games. Dizzy is more about story, dialogue and adventure while Egghead is more arcade game testing your reflexes.

wasn't Dizzy's shape due to a package the Oliver Twins had to rotate sprites?
