Also why do the metro apps not appear on the task bar.

Because Metro apps are, conceptually at least, always "running". Therefore if they appeared in the task bar, you'd have a task bar full of every single installed Metro app, which would be pointless, since it would just duplicate the Start screen (only less usefully)

But the start screen isn't useful, it's a pointless encumbrance. Now you have two types of app, in two types of place and sometimes both. Some apps you can close, minimise and arrange on screen and some apps you cant. That's fine for me, but for the likes of my mum and dad a tad confusing. I see many people in their situation buying a mac.

The sooner some third party figures out how to place metro apps in a proper container the better.

Microsoft have put the cart before the horse in adopting the metro application behaviours in their desktop. Yeah sure make the desktop compatible with metro apps, but not as the centrepiece of the whole OS.

Windows 8 just deployed an update to my computer, I now can't access the non metro internet explorer unless I manually navigate to the EXE from the file explorer. It's gone from being pinned from the task bar and its gone from the metro app selection screen. However, what has appears is a stupid f*king browser choice program (I know it sounds stupid but I kill it the moment it starts, I'll make my own choices thank you). A program that exists for legal reasons only, because the European court thought MS could not be trusted. It really should be removed, Apple does not have to do this and their OSes only come with Safari.

Apple get away with it because they've got a relatively small market share, where Microsoft were pretty close to a monopoly at the time the judgement was made. Even now they've still got a 90% share of the desktop OS market so it's not likely to be rescinded any time soon.

I'd be pleased to hear from any wosers that know a hack to put the W7 start menu on W8.

I know MS closed an earlier loop hole, but I wonder if anyone knows a new hack.

What I don't want is third party start menu applications.

I know of one hack in which you can run the Windows 7 shell in windows 8, but rather I'd just like a start menu like the early versions of w8 could enable using a registry tweak.

I want to try and maintain compatibility and reliability, with exception to metro apps which I could not give a toss about.

Why bother with Windows 8 at all then?

Well minus the metro ui elements there are a lot of good reasons particularly in relation to file histories and better multi monitor support. Also in its improved boot times. Windows 7 was fast when new, but w8 is even faster.

On my new build, I'm getting roughly 5 seconds from post to login, and login is instant. I have imaged the install and will use this as a quick way to browse the web. However, my real windows work will be done on my W7 installation.

Given the Unity Desktop in Ubuntu you might want to try Mint Linux first - its more of a classic desktop. With the first Ubuntu phone coming out in a month or so you can see the design going the same way as Win 8 with the desktop and mobile UI's being morphed into one unholy mess.

    debian with xfce

    :-)

    +1 for Debian.

And I select my favourite / most suitable desktop to use on it, same as on any other distro.

I never get why the Linux community feel they have to follow a main stream trend, ribbon controllers, unity desktop etc when they should plough their own better furrow. There's enough skilled individuals out there.

Linux provides a choice of free software, for a wide range of hardware. One desktop, which happens to be the default in one distribution, which is tailored to one set of new hardware devices, is not representative of 'the Linux Community' - if there really is such a single entity. IMHO

I see that Microsoft have launched a TV advertising campaign for Windows 8. James Corden is certainly an interesting choice to promote a media product that some people seem to find pointless and highly irritating... :-o
