just read abou this news... the thing I don't get about horse meat (and selling horse meat for cow), is that from my knowledge it's easier to raise cows... they are easier to reproduce (I've never seen "horse farms" but I've seen plenty "cow farms" so I've always assumed that there must be more cows in the world than horses) and cows have much more meat than horses...

so what's the gain in selling cheaper an animal that exists in lesser quantities and you can sell less meat? (maybe I'm just being ignorant about this subject)

people just sell the dead horses to slaughter houses, they may not have raised them for that purpose.

    i assume :D

there is loads of reasons.. as shown on the news.. horse is 1/5 of the price of beef.. farmer will tell you it cost far less in feed etc to feed a horse

the thing they inject em with "bute" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylbutazone
..although how they fit an isle into em is beyond me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Bute (I bet their search engine rating is a lot higher now)

There is one debate that everyone seems to be avoiding. That is whether it is "horsemeat" or "horse meat" :D:D:D:D:D

The BBC are catagorically sticking to horsemeat, whilst Wikipedia uses horse<space>meat. Whereas the Daily Mail cannot decide and uses both in a single article

The Daily Mail prefers "evil death scum meat from Europe that was Gordon Brown's doing"

I dunno with all this shonky meat business going on makes you wonder if Mr. Brains actually contain brains?

.....and if so from which animal, or should that be animals? Or even humans? :D

My local McDonald's staff didn't have much of a sense of humour when I ordered a burger there yesterday: they asked if I wanted anything on it, so I asked for a fiver each way...

I imagine they'll be selling em' for cheap as well?

Wonder if they're going to feed the affected products to tramps? Like when the BSE scare was on in the 90's bums suddenly got treated to roast beef dinners at the hostels and soup kitchens.

Tactful population control I'm sure :D

    I'm shocked!!!!
The "Kids meal" at our local shop does not have human kids meat in it, but only chicken meat. I wrote a complainment letter today.
By the way, Horse meat is excellent. Many people eat it in Austria as it has less fat and no growing hormons in it.

Nah, not at all. I never bought any meals at all anyway preferring to make my own (cheaper and tastes better). The only other thing I would buy would be burgers, but now that I make my own, too, I can rule them out.

    1) No, we get most of our meat from a proper butchers anyway

    2) I don't much care what's in the ready meals. They're reasonably tasty, easy to cook in the microwave, and never made me ill yet so clearly they're perfectly edible :p

nope, I mean I eat sausages (high meat content) and look at what they are wrapped in.

I don't do ready meals due to the MASSIVE hidden salt / sugar content most have and hide.. e.g. sodium instead of salt and they purposely don't show the % things on the front.

I did used to do cheap burgers, but last lot I had were aberdeen angus and far from cheap.

I do find the bloke from the co-op a hypocrite though, mouthing off about other supermarkets... and yet there was a nice show about their funeral business and how they treated the people etc.

it'll get sorted.. and well this isn't the first time criminals have done such things.. e.g. booze being the main thing.

we only really buy lasagna ready meals, ive made it fresh before but its too much washing up.

when i was single id buy ready meals, as it too much faffing for one person making everything fresh

i guess i could avoid ready meals if i was worried about what was in them, but then i do like eating out or getting a takeaway, and i wouldn't start quizzing the staff about where they are getting their meat.

you hear these people on the tv saying how they know exactly where their meat comes from and it makes me wonder if they only eat veg when they go out.

Like redballoon, I only use the local proper butcher and make my own.

Plus, if he has rabbit in (cheap and plentiful), you know it ain't horse.

It's less hassle to make stuff from scratch if you make a big batch and eat it over 2-3 days plus it works out pretty cheap and you know what you've put in.
