The Simpsons is not a spin-off, it was an insert in the Tracey Ullman show in the USA. Unfortunately when it was imported over here the BBC, in their infinite wisdom, decided to remove it. Whoops!!!

How about Joey, spin-off from Friends..

Friends was good.. Joey was crap.

Crusade, spin-off from Babylon 5. Axed after a handful of episodes. Good series.

I'd say that starting off as 1 min inserts in someone else's show and then later getting an entire show of their own would pretty much be a textbook definition of "TV spin-off" but I'm not going to split hairs :)

But it wasn't part of the Tracey Ullman show, it was an insert. The Simpsons characters and Tracey never appeared together on screen which is how the BBC were able to remove The Simpsons.

If those sort of spin offs are going to count then check out the Ronnie Barker series "7 Of 1" as he managed about 5 or 6 series from the "One Off" characters. Open All Hours was easily the most successful of the lot ;-)
Bold statement seeing as Porridge was developed from the Prisoner and Escort story of the series!

I found out this week that some of the fast show charecters had some spin off series... never aired in portugal, but where they any good? (fast show is still one of my favourite shows ever!)
There was also Grass, which featured Billy Bleach on the Witness protection programme!
