post office price rises 2013

they are at it again.. this time REALLY sneaky like when they upped international prices last time and masked it with bad news on UK posting.

http://www.royalmail.com/prices-2013

they are messing around with "packet" size also.. have a fake letter box thing to measure them like large letter format. where previously you could get away with any size pretty much for packet.. so no "Price rises" yer right.. change the goal posts though.

99p for Speccy tape, $700 for shipping to US, Finding the tape has Kajagoogoo taped over it, Priceless.

Prices are going up silly here too, they are also stopping Saturday delivery starting in August.

I send a monthly set of documents to our factory in Taiwan and it was $37 last month, this month it was $48...25% increase in one month!

hope it wasn't off me, my postage is normally $900 , so it' couldn't have been ;)

just get a cdr , re-dub it from here.. done. in some cases it's actually better than the p-poor mastering done on some original releases.

They are just going to lose more and more customers unfortunately - the waiting times in post offices are going to increase as the counter staff have to start measuring parcels as well as letters, and it is going to be a lot more expensive to send everything.

At least the cost of posting rubber key membranes should remain the same (a large letter stamp which is not increasing) - though I am not sure if the A3 cardboard envelopes i use for the Spectrum + membranes will be a small packet or a medium packet!

    WHAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!??!?!?! :-o

News to me. This for real, yo?

EDIT: Ah, seems like it is. But also found this:
    http://www.foxbusiness.com/government/2013/03/21/saturday-mail-delivery-could-survive/?intcmp=trending

    So maybe it will survive.

Not that it bothers me. I'm ok with losing Saturday delivery as long as they DO NOT raise the postage (for another 5-10 years)

the frame thing is about 2 3rd's height wise of a rubber key speccy from the bottom of the keyboard to the top of the membrane.

I will start using couriers more or doing bigger bundles of things I guess.

Royal Mail have (deliberately or otherwise) priced themselves out of the large parcel market here. It'll be cheaper to send stuff by courier unless (like me) you've got access to a RM business account.

Lots of other changes, including compensation limit dropping from ?46 to ?20, unless you use Recorded (sorry - "Signed For" as it is going to be rebadged) then it has gone up from ?46 to ?50. Recorded is currently an extra 95p, "Signed For" is an extra ?1.10.

    A 1kg parcel 8cm deep is "Small Parcel" @ ?2.60.
    A 1kg parcel 8.1cm deep is "Medium Parcel" @ ?5.20.

I posted a Special Delivery parcel today that was between 1kg and 2kg. Cost me ?9.75. Will now be ?16.20 - a ?6.45 price increase.

In short, I'll be sending as little as possible by Royal Mail from 2nd April!

It's been "signed for" for a few years now actually!

They have dropped the compensation limit, due to all the parcels they lose!

As for parcel sizes - it still does not answer the query over an A3 cardboard envelope !!

According to RM these are the maximum dimensions for a small packet:

    Length - 45cm
    Width - 35cm
    Depth - 8cm

so A3 envelopes should be OK.

There's also 2 exceptions which are classed as Small Parcels:

Parcels that measure up to and including:
Length: 16cm and Width: 16cm and Depth: 16cm

Roll or cylinder shaped parcels that measure up to and including:
    Length: 45cm and Diameter: 8cm

It's the 8cm depth restriction that winds me up. 95% of my stuff is not heavy, but is over that size limit.

The 16x16x16 doesn't help much either, as the length of a fairly small jiffy bag is over 16cm.

I'm only selling stuff as a one time thing; this is really going to hurt the small businesses that only make pennies per item.

These price increases stink. I feel sorry for the people who are reliant on Scumbay to make ends meet as its now more difficult for these people to make any money. Bloody coperate greed.

Just listed some stuff and worked out the price rises.

    It's now ? 5.20 to post a the joystick [300g].

But the consolation is I can post an empty cardboard box [<100g but greater than 8cm thick] to Australia for ?4.70 but it would cost me ?5.20 to send 2 miles down road.

Collect+ and myhermes [even though I had issues with both] now seem a viable option

i was thinking about this the other day.. and well anything that is in a card box.. e.g. robocop , super wonderboy and a lot of the ocean later games all go over 2.5 cm height .. it's only worth selling in job lots or make it known the postage gets far cheaper..

i boycott parcel2go and the RM for large items now.. so interparcel will get more of my sales..

only pity with myhermes / collect+ there isn't a parcel shop near here.
  • edited April 2013
I have 2 collect+ places in the village I live, a garage and a co-op. Both open early and close late 7 days, so at 3.99 for a <2kg parcel they will be getting a bit more trade.

There's also a Hermes shop on the way to work, but they're no cheaper when you add the cost of a signature, but they will take larger parcels than Collect+

The cheapest service must be Collect + "Shop to Shop" which is only ?3.49 up 10kg, which I have used, and was very quick,

Royal Mail is also making changes to the amount of compensation you get when things go wrong. The amount will depend on the type of service you use. For example, for standard first or second class services the maximum amount of compensation payable will be ?20 and for Signed For services, the maximum amount will be ?50.

I personally wouldn't use Royal Mail's website guide (or the one on eBay, for that matter) as I could not make head nor tail of the cost of an item. I followed all the sizes and weights and class of postage and WTF! ?13 odd...that can't be right?!?

So, I had 2 packages; 1 with a mid-size cardboard box game, 'Nightshift', wrapped in 1 layer of bubble wrap and further wrapped in a layer of packing paper, so not much bigger than the unwrapped box and the 2nd package of 4 mid-sized cardboard box games and 1 double cassette, 1 layer bubble wrap, 1 layer packing paper. The 2nd package, according to the website (or so I thought) was the 1 I thought was over a tenner. Anyway, into post office, package 1 (Nightshift) ?2.60. Fair enough, losing out on 10p as advertised on the listing. And now the 2nd package. I was nervous, thinking I had pretty much lost all the money I had made selling the buggers....aaaannnd, here it comes...the cost...wincing...?2.60.

I looked at the 2 packages, completely different in both size and weight, yet the same price and, oh Sweet Moses, never follow the website!

I have only used the Collect+ service once - someone sent me something - alas when I went to the shop to pick it up, at first they could not find it - then after a bit of a search, they realised it had been put in the bag to go back on the van the next morning to be returned !!

It is now CRAZY that it can be cheaper to send an item to Australia than to somewhere in the same town!

because of ebay, I'm pretty much a postage price geek , as are more on here no doubt.
I go into the post office with everything pre-weighed and stamped and *HATE* the same 3 usual f'kers who turn up with 20-40 packets and they have to stand their like a "git" holding up everyone else with their stupidness.

what twigged me to get clued up was when the post office was charging me for packet size.. and I could have got away with Large Letter, tetley teabagins was helpful with letting me know about that

the website price finder combined with the rather confusing PDF is decent enough *IF* you know what you are doing and have weighed it properly.

no,very good... but you know the the score... judging by all that

I used to use them POP books.. but well they don't count as valid now... so i make em print out receipts.. rarely do I have over 6 items.. sod using my ink ;)

probably will use post shop more , myhermes is nearest.. and well by next year they are really gonna do ebayers over with their postage. "we won't up the postage this year".. nah ever 2nd year.. and change the goalposts between them times :)

today I got some first edition dr. who stamp things.. idiots put my name/address on them, when I specifically didn't want that. YET put them in an outer envelope where they could have put a sticker on...

post office blame royal mail for stuff
royal mail blame post office for stuff

aggh you'd think they'd just sort it out.. and have some sense.. pity as it spoilt the first editions which are going back to em
