I could well imagine that, especially if these screenshots are running on genuine console hardware. Looking at those in-game screenshots (if that's what they are) it's much easier to believe that they are taken from next-generation proto-type hardware rather than PS3/360 hardware.
I really hope they are 360/PS3 screenshots though, as I'm already drowning in consoles, and want to put off buying a new one for as long as possible - I could do with not buying another game for at least five years, so I can make a dent in my *huge* gaming backlog.
GTAV is on current gen consoles. Games like these take years to develop, and games studios haven't had the (rumoured) next gen dev kits for that long.
Look at both the trailers - no way are they next gen graphics.
"The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level. GTA 4 was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult. Now we know what the hardware's capable of, so it's become a lot easier to move things along and a lot more fun, too."
Rockstar isn't only familiar with development for the current generation, but the consoles themselves are at their peak performance, Houser says:
"GTA: San Andreas came out at the peak of the PlayStation 2's cycle, and we put out a really good game thanks to that. All the best games for a console come out at the end of the life cycle, right? So now's the best timing of all."
Look at the difference between GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption. Two similar games by the same company on the same platforms, but the latter is vastly superior graphically. The two years between the games gave Rockstar time to learn more about the hardware. We'll see even bigger improvements in GTA V.
The same goes for Oblivion and Skyrim. Massive differences in the graphics and performance. Yet they were both on the same platforms and developed by the same company. Oblivion came out near the start of the current gen life-cycle, Skyrim was five years later.
I hope, that it looks on my xbox 360 similar to the anouncement pictures.
to buy a new console only for a brilliant new game is not my will, but probably necessary. i fear

Yep, I pretty much bought the 360 just for GTA IV, so I know what you mean...
saw some stuff on Facebook earlier - looking promising indeed....or at least like it'll let me waste many many many hours hooning round fictional cities in the rain cos it looks pretty
Me too! The weather effects are looking fantastic! They were already pretty amazing in RDR...
I just hope you can change the weather at any time (I love rain effects in game, they make the world feel more 'real' somehow), using push button cheats on the joypad, as you can on GTA San Andreas (XBox), but not on GTA IV (Xbox 360) - bloody achievement points have all but killed off cheat modes.

I wish I could be excited by this but i find GTA is hugely fun for a brief time and then quickly grows stale. I briefly enjoyed the original top-down version before getting bored and GTA 3 was amazing for about 2 weeks and then seemed strangely dull.
I can appreciate what they are doing in this series (taking Turbo Esprit to its modern extreme) but its appeal is always very limited for me and so I am more than happy to wait a long time and pick it up cheap for an afternoons fun but feel no compulsion to see it through to whatever silly hard ass gangster conclusion it leads to.
I suppose it is a bit like FPS games for me, something I feel I should enjoy but do not (I still think the original Doom is better than all modern FPS games except in terms of graphics).
GTA3 - lost MONTHS! And attained 100% completion. Stonking game.
GTA Vice City - loved the 80's radio stations but imo, found the game a little monotonous. Also the maps were too "flat" and consisted of waaay too many stretches of beaches.
GTA San Andreas - restored my faith in the GTA series. Originally played the PS2 version and reliving it all over again on the PC. Great missions, storyline and extras.
GTA4 - I preferred The Ballad of Gay Tony tbh and the missions were great. Would loved to had seen more added. However, GTA4 for me, seem to lack something. For example; I don't have much incentive to complete all the side extras like I did with San Andreas.
GTAV - I still believe though that Rockstar has seriously listened to Joe Public's criticisms and feedback and GTAV will deliver. A case of wait with abated breath I guess. :)

yeah i think so.
i read somewhere that a lot of players mentioned that they loved the bank robber mission in gta4, so they are focusing on heist missions with lots of planning for them.
I hope they bring back the gang territory takeover part from GTA:SA. Ive just finished The Godfather which embraced this mechanic and added a lot more gameplay making you want to reclaim the whole of NY one shop front / racket at a time. It was also used in The Saboteur with really good strategic results where you could permanently remove guard towers along a route giving you a good rat run escape route if you were chased by the nazis as if you dont clear them out its easier for them to continue pursuing.
While GTA4 was a good game i never really had fun like i did in Just Cause 2 and Saints Row and i hope at least they attempt to realise the balance between fun and realistic.

I enjoyed The Godfather too, but the fact that every type of shop had the exact same layout made an extremely repetitive job of taking over all the territories. Good game, though. Didn't play the sequel, I heard it was awful?

For sheer map size San Andreas was the one for me. I used to love driving around the countryside and exploring.
Loved the 80's soundtrack in Vice City and used to love going to the golf course and mowing down the old golfers:grin:
I had a lot of technical problems getting GTA IV to run properly but once it was i loved it although there was no countryside.
I completed the Lost and the Damned but haven't got into the ballad of Gay Tony yet.

PC version? Same here. I had GTA IV on xbox360 but my kids played on the console more than me so ditched it (the game, not my kids!) Then I bought the PC version about three years ago and my PC simply couldn't cope with the mimimum settings. Last year I bought another and while it's classed as middle-of-the-range, it runs GTA IV at an average 30-40fps so was quite chuffed lol. I then bought PC version of GTA3, GTA San Andreas and Vice City (which were all originally played on Playstation 2). :)
I'm hoping that a PC version of GTA5 will be released (still no news yet) but I think I'll be back to square one again and my PC specs won't be good enough. So when the time comes, I guess my kids will have to find something else to do when I boot them off the xbox360!

And anyway, Rockstar have confirmed it's current gen: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/14/why-grand-theft-auto-5-is-sticking-to-current-gen-systems/

Aye, looking good. Looking forward to scuba diving...

i thought the were cheats in gta iv?
Most if not all 360 games will disable achievements if you use cheat codes regardless if they make the game easier or are just cosmetic.
the cheat mode is still there though.

so plenty of HEAT action, i hope. ;-)
I agree. It's not like they've sold many units since GTA 3, or anything... :p

You'll like "Gay Tony". It has golf. :D

Hopefully we'll get to see gameplay footage in these, not just cut scenes.
