Strike Force Cobra (Piranha) (Preview Copy 7.8.86)

Hiya! I picked up a bunch of games recently and inside the Strike Force Cobra box were two tapes. One was the regular release and the other had a plain white label with "Strike Force Cobra Preview Copy 7.8.86" typed on it and "PIRANHA" written on in pen below. I converted it to TZX and it does appear to be legit. There's no loading screen, no team selection, no sound and you get an option to abort on the status report/pause screen. Why it was knocking about with a complete version of the game, I dunno. I assume it was sent to a magazine or similar and they possibly got the full game and packaging later. I think we can assume it wouldn't have been Sinclair User as they'd not have needed the game to review it... ahem! ;)

Anyway, I've uploaded it via FTP but thought I'd add it here as well via Dropbox for a bit in case anyone wanted to check it out. As far as I can tell it's pretty much the complete game bar [some of] the sound effects and team selection bit. I've not really played the "proper" version much but it makes me wonder if there's any difference at all between the team members?

    Probably you bought the tape out of an ex-Piranha coder/artist?

    funny you say that.. it got me thinking.. and I doubt five- way produced it for em.

    I will ask someone to see if it jogs their memory. I don't think they had in house staff and put it out to 3rd party dev's

    There was nothing particularly unusual in the job lot I bought apart from that one tape. Just your usual load of budget games with a few full pricers and some home taped stuff. I don't think the guy was anything to do with Piranha but he'd obviously ended up with the tape at some point.

    was it the one with the books behind it in the pic ? ;) think I saw that one.

    I get the odd review copy of a game.. 2 from hewson so far.. again not much different from the for sale version.

    I did ask who I thought might have done it... and they said they probably weren't involved.. but I need to speak to another coder who did a sub-contract job for pirhana , for them to confirm it..

    Yeah, definately worth keeping just for reference. Steve likes to gather these too.
    Maybe these were sent out to mags for review as mentioned.
