Castle Computers Stoke

Looking through an old Crash just now and I noticed an ad for Castle Computers in Burslem, couldnt help but google map it. Seems tiny considering they seemed to be always in the ads. Anyone any memories of the place?

    yep, as will CodenameV

we knew loads of folks who worked there and I know the (ex)owner

in fact one guy left and went on to later start up PC Engine Supplies which then became Console Concepts, it may look small bit being a corner building the upstairs was quite sizeable and packed full of games you be surprised how many cassetes you could store

Always good to hear stories about these old shops, why did it close? Theres more than a handful who made it through to the present day, why not Castle?

dunno about soft options byt Andi Anant used to be Castle Computers retail shop, which then became Power Dome (which was my suggestion and layout design and decorated by me in a post apocolyptic styleee) which was here (the Polish Shop)

I can only remember two places that did repairs one was Bentley's on Newcastle St Burslem the other was the Computer Cabin which was on the shop precinct in Silverdale which later moved to King St. There may have been others but I'm not sure.

I have a Castle Computers catalogue somewhere, did a lot of business with them back in the 80's...

Castle Computers had three stores in Stoke-on-Trent: Burslem, Hanley and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

I remember that the Burslem shop was here (the green building on the corner). The first link you posted Macc was perhaps the original location, but around 1989/90 that place was known as "Tokyo Joe's" (I don't know where this name came from - it wasn't written above the door or anything. Incidentally, it was the door with three steps leading up to it.) I never actually went in, but I remember wanting a GameBoy, and a lad at school was like "you gotta go to Tokyo Joe's, they're half the price that they are in Dixons!". So me and me mum went up one Saturday morning and knocked on that door but no-one answered. I gather that through that door were steps that went straight up and Tokyo Joe's was situated above the neighbouring shops. There was a forum post (might have been on WoS) a few years back where someone took over the floor space years later, and said the walls were covered with old game posters. Edit: post here.

As Binman says, the second link was the Hanley Castle Computers shop, on Hope Street. The Newcastle one was down by the Old Brown Jug pub (it was one of these shops, I forget which).

Thinking about it, there were loads of game/computer shops in Hanley.

Software Superstore (in that mini-arcade, next to Fantasy World. Brought loads of Speccy games from here, great store)

Town Computers (on Town Rd, more of a serious computer shop, although I remember buying Jack the Nipper on the Speccy from there)

Fiction Factory (in the bus station, in the underpass bit. The shop was underground, and yet it had a basement with some arcade games in, felt like you were in the bowels of the earth lol).

There was also one opposite the old Tesco, was that Console Concepts?

Edit: I see, Binman already pointed out it was Power Dome. I used to go to school with a guy who worked there, think his name was Craig.

I like this kind of thread, and I think I remember the company name from reading Crash back in the day. Looking on Google Street View, it's pretty sad to see almost all the buildings at the first location boarded up. Well, not only there - seems to be happening all over the place these days, either boarded up or having those "To Let" signs everywhere - it's the same over here in some cities. Quite depressing, we need more of this, nice idea.

I'd assume this is the same Castle Computers at Moorland Road, also in Burslem? Maybe one of you locals know that location if you have a look in Street View.

So, those from around Stoke, who remembers The Computer Cabin (Kabin?) in Silverdale (somewhere on the parade)? Also Town Computers in Hanley (Town Road). I had a Saturday job in Town Computers in the 80s - mostly that job involved sticking cassettes in and loading games for my mates, who invariably wouldn't buy anything.

Edit: Ah, MartynC, I probably sold you that copy of Jack the Nipper. The boss, Bruce (stingy tosser), didn't like to get his hands dirty :-s
