TIM Interlace Software

edited April 2013 in Development
Not sure if this is the right forum but in my own time I plan to get some stuff up to the archive. I just came across something almost 10 years old.

It's software that Alvin Albrecht (Alcoholics Anonymous) wrote for me so that I could make my own interlaced screens. I don't know if he still lives here anymore but I don't think he'd mind (Unfortunately his sprite pack web site seems to be gone, in case whoever is maintaining the utilities page is reading this)

It runs in DOS so it's command line driven. It's old so you might have to use DOS Box but anyway I would have to write up some instructions for the app. So, if there's enough interest I'll try to get it done, I mean I plan to upload it either way, but I can upload it as it is or I can make it into a package with instructions and a small tutorial, which I would have to write up, outlining my approach at interlace with the Spectrum palette, with images and steps to do this (as well as my memory serves me, anyway):

Ah thanks kindly. I guess it's being hosted for him (unless he own the domain?)

On WOS the link I saw is http://justme895.tripod.com/main.htm

I supose its not the SP1 lib you mean?
Can you tell a bit more anyway. Is it working on a real zx or is it dosbox emulator only? it looks good, eg the turtle has complex colouring, and a LED reflection on its head

Yes it works on a real machine. Alvin had his friend test it on a Timex and it was thumbs up impressed. I still feel somewhat indebted to Alvin. He was the only (or one of a couple) people who ever approached me and said "I'll program that for you" or "How about we use your graphics in a game?" or something. Until then it was PC experiments I was running and wanted some way to try it for real. I was loading screen$ into memory and printing them on screen but it wasn't fast enough so I'd increase emulator speed to see the effect or I'd make animated gifs from the screen$ to see the effect.

In a copy of ZX Format (can't remember the issue number) it was reviewed and tested on a Spectrum. Working.

There is flicker of course. These photos mix the colors better :-)

That example image is taken from an emulator though. Best results are when only using 1/3 or 2/3 of the screen. That is full screen. I also originally had 4 screens but for memory *I think* I cut it down to two. I think I have a a demo that demos a 2 or 3 screen version (not as nice) and the 4 screen version (flicker more but better)

I'll upload a couple more images of just the lower part of the screen if my phone signal doesn't disconnect. They are a little sharper and close up.

Anyway I plan to upload it whether there's interest in a toot or not. I should have crude instructions somewhere. I can't remember I'll up whatever I have in any case.

From the "only lower 1/3 of screen" demo.

Here's a composite of the four Spectrum screen$ (only a portion)

... and this I also found. Can't find the Spectrum files. It's another "composite". No idea if it was ever finished or not.
