I would love to write a lawnmower racing simulator with an actual physical model. The sort where someone has attached a wheeled seat behind a petrol mower. The driver's whole bodyweight pivoted behind the lighter mower must make for some magnificent understeer, almost like dragging the pods behind you in Thrust.
It is with heavy heart that I have to announce delays in the production schedule of the much-anticipated lawnmowing game ALS:Tactics. Complex matters have set the schedule back by several days; possibly even a week. Nevertheless, here at Joefish Industries we are committed to bringing you the best quality game imaginable, and I have been authorised to disclose that recent improvements mean that an entire third bank of UDGs will now feature. We thank you for your continued patience.
Ah, in fact such business-related decisions are seemlessly handled for you by an advanced, and largely unseen, AI assistant. Pre-cutting decisions are restricted to the choice of one of three lawnmowers before each garden is attempted - it is assumed that each will provide an optimum cut in its own particular way, and only gardens that present an appropriate challenge and suitable reimbursement will be presented. It would be unfair to place further decisions on the player before the condition of the next garden had been revealed. The real-time tactical element lies in the planning and execution taken to optimise the cut of the lawns themselves.
The game was originally written in 1990 but one of the data tapes got lost over the years so I had to re-write a large portion of it from scratch, and import graphics from other games I had made.
The game was destined to be submitted to Your Sinclair for use on one of their cover tapes, but beer, motorbikes and women came along and put an end to my toilet humour programming antics so it never got finished!
Eagle-eyed YS readers may have seen the Scott Faece character before...
Anyhow glad its finished after all these years, I might get another game out before the end of the year if I can find the time!
Cheers for the review, glad you enjoyed it!

I knew you'd worked hard on it but didn't realise it had so much background to it. Pleased it's finally managed release
EDIT>I should point out the uploaded version has a bugfix that fixed the 'level 20 loop bug' and has an end of game sequence (which means I'll have to play it through again!).

...don't get me started, (apart from the motorbikes that is, oh and there's not been that many women, and I tend to prefer wine)...

I was worried I was missing a lot of the references in the game (I was too concentrated on trying to make a TAP from the WAVs!). So you are the 'destrukto' that sent the drawing in?
Davey, you misunderstood the compo rules. It requires games which are crap, not games about crap
Come on man, I played it and it is actually nice, playable, and looks good, well maybe apart from the hero. But well, we can all pretend he's a worm, can we? ;)
Go and upload it to WOS among normal games where it belongs to.

Well, it's now been entered into the 'crap' process. We just have to wait for it to plop out of the other end... :-o
Does it screw up a 128K? Ah, I suppose the number of UDGs might be a problem.
If you look closely at the listing you might be amused to see how that title 'tune' is played. And you should have found that you don't actually need to BREAK in to level-skip, but if you want to do it the hard way...
[Seriously, if you want to play it as a puzzle game, try turning the sound off and crank the emulation speed up to 400% (14MHz)].
And it's a FACTORY with the slanted roof. Good grief...

Yes that's a crap poke. I don't feel I've done it justice really, it's been a full week & I was cream crackered, I'll look at the code again at the weekend and update the review.

I did think the 'hero' of the game should be called 'Patrick Mower'.

So far I'm thinking of a free pass to the British Lawnmower museum, (train fare to Southport not included).
You will even get to meet Nora, the hotty of the lawnmowing world.

kempston/cursor joystick?
Neither of those. Sinclair 2 or Keyboard. Oh, go on then... Kempston if I have to.

This one will be getting its own WoS entry, a great game davey (for shame!).
Funny you should ask, davey asked me to try joystick on his above entry. Keys for me all the way though.
inlays are very impressive;)
Just found some oiptions of Spectaculator:-?
Now I can write code for the kempston joy

Hope so, but if it's this good it deserves a WoS thread in 'New Software' and appropriate praise rather than the CGC!

Oh dear oh dear, I think Davey must be in the running to host it next year..! :p
Played this for over 15 minutes.. Not a good sign.

ALS: Tactics

I've not had enough time to play this so haven't solved all the puzzles yet, have a bash!
Also note the lawnmower minicomp.
Kettle's on. Downloading now...
It's worth mentioning that it should be loaded in 48K mode.
By the way when does the mini competition finish as the 3rd and final part of the Lawnmower Chronicles is still in the R&D stage?

The lawnmower one will last all year, I wouldn't want to rush anything as majestic as the Lawnmower Chronicles.
It doesn't so much screw up but if you use the Tape loader Option it prints the SPECTRUM command on the screen in places.
