Oxford Speccy meetup - what date?

edited May 2013 in Announcements
Hello. It has been brought to my attention that Spectrums, weekends, beer and Oxford have been combined successfully in the past, and it's about time we did it again.

So, let's decide on a date for the next Oxford Speccy pubmeet. Here's a poll...

(Venue to be decided. For previous participants who aren't aware: the Gloucester Arms is now the White Rabbit, and has been repainted in a non-edgy shade of white. It fulfils the condition of being a pub, but is conspicuously not the Gloc any more.)

Excellent. Do we have any more specific plans yet (time, location?). I have a pass out but am starting to think about travel etc :-)

I propose Jude The Obscure, in Jericho. Meeting up around 1-2pm usually works well - shall we go for that?

Personally, I tend to try and avoid Greene King pubs when away from East Anglia (as they're a bit ubiquitous around here), but happy with it if other people are :-)

I'd be tempted to come to this (last time I came to any sort of Speccy meetup was in 2001) if Oxford wasn't such an almighty trek from East Kent.

I'd be up for a London meet at some point this summer though if anyone's interested - perhaps I'll start a new thread :-)

This all looks like a good opportunity for a motorcycle road trip :-)

Is there room for one more?

I've always fancied going to an Oxford meet as I've never been, but unfortunately prior-commitments have always gotten in the way.

*sharp intake of breath*... go on then, I think we can fit you on to the guest list. :-)

If only Kent had some kind of high-speed train service to London, which is just one hour away from Oxford... ;-)

If it was exactly 1 hour 38 minutes from Ashford to Oxford I'd be happy - it's the big old Londony tubey bit in the middle that slows the journey down by an hour according to thetrainline.net.

The Tube times listed on rail websites are generally ridiculous overestimates - my quick look on nationalrail.co.uk said 45 mins from St Pancras to Paddington, whereas the actual TfL website will tell you that's a 16 minute journey. Even given a few minutes wandering around at either end and a few minutes waiting for a train, it's not going to take 45 minutes.

Well in that case I'll have a think :)

    *bump*

This weekend, folks! Saturday, from 1pm-ish, Jude The Obscure.

Just so you're all prewarned, I will *definitely* be referring to this the next time a CSS/WoS/Speccy meetup outside of that London is suggested. :p

Bit late to ask, but I'm thinking of putting in an appearance... I don't have anybody's number, though!

Looks like some interesting people are going! Same here, I don't have anyone's number but I will be at Jude the Obscure from 1pm and also looking to get lunch at some point.

I have brought the following with me for interest's sake:

Timex Sinclair 2068 (modified with switchable Timex / Spectrum ROMs and S-video output)
    Timex Computer 2068
    Timex Computer 2048
    Microdigital TK90X
    Microdigital TK90X (black keyboard)
    Microdigital TK85

I also have a number of the EPROMs used in the above mod available for sale.

Look forward to meeting everyone later!

Thanks for taking those, and talking me through the collection. Quite a few machines I've never seen in the flesh, and possibly the biggest collection of 'Speccies' I've ever seen in the corner of a pub.

Was a pleasant meet, thankyou to all.

You obviously missed the bit (I think you'd left) where we were being called w**kers...

I want to thank Matt for organising what turned out to be, for me, a very interesting meeting in Oxford. Thanks to everyone else too for putting up with my ignorance in many Spectrum-related topics :).

Who by? A rowdy bunch of Commodore 64 owners?

It was some random guy probably in his 50s, I don't think he really meant any malice, it was more of a case of "You keep using that word. It does not mean what you think it means!"

Ah. The good reputation of Oxford's pub goers remains (more or less) in tact then.
