Modern replacement PSU for +3

edited May 2013 in Hardware
This has probably been beaten to death in earlier threads.. but are there modern sized replacement PSUs for +3 available? My quick search did not result to anything fancy and I would not be bothered to build one (since they tend to look so darned ugly without proper casing) etc..

Some HP Laser Printers got an internal PSU which is lighter and perhaps smaller than the original +3 power brick, and could do fine with that. Those have no case but it shouldn't be too hard to find one in which they would fit. The only problem is I don't have a clue on the printer models, but this information might give you a start on your search. Should cost about 8 quid.

The simple answer if you need a plug in replacement is no. But if you are willing to make up a cable or do some soldering a ATX or AT PSU will do the job, I've used a PicoPSU successfully, you should be able to get it inside the +3 and have a cheap power brick outside.

I've got a +3, and I use sometimes a picoPSU. Normally, I use the original +3 PSU for the Speccy and the picoPSU for accesories (HxC, divIDE, a external FDD), but other times I the picoPSU is powering everything.

Because I use it for powering internal and external devices, I wouldn't recommend to put the picoPSU inside the computer (and you could make it a suitable casing with almost anything... mine is inside a modified DLT tape box, but you could use any small non-conductive box).

The big drawback is that those PSUs are not cheap.

@perksey: If you do know the spare number of that HP PSU, it is very easy to know what printers use it. Could you post the SP# and what power outputs does it have?
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

OK.. got myself few picoPSUs. Wonderful thingies. This is how the +2A looks outside after the mod. Man I love it and finally also on/off switch. Next to mod is my +3 :p

That's quite cool. :) I was thinking actually that there may be enough room inside a +2 to put a custom made PSU, if you can get a transformer the right size.
