Anyone here clever with USB sticks?

edited May 2013 in Chit chat
You lot are clever chaps - any idea what's going on here.

I'm backing up about 40gb worth of photos and vids of the family kids, etc. to a 64gb USB stick. However, when I copy it all across, only around 20gb is being transferred, with many directories simply left empty!

I've tried it en-masse and by individual folder; I've also formatted and CHKDSK'd /F it to see if there are problems.

I also get the issue where I can't delete some folders on the USB. It gives me the option to, when I right-click the folder, but when I select delete... nothing! No deletion, no error message, the only thing that works is if I rename the folder and then delete it!

A search on the interweb suggests the files may be hidden and setting the visible attributes via CMD may work. This hasn't worked for me.

The only thing that makes me think I haven't got a duff USB is the fact that Windows 7(32) has never given me an error warning.

Would a duff USB act like this, or am I missing something?

Many thanks.

I've had this twice, once with a USB stick and once connecting to the memory card in my phone.

The phone problem ended up being a duff usb cable and ended up with the memory card crapping out and having to be reformatted.

The memory stick problem came down to it being one of those increadibly cheap but large sized sticks (?10 for 32Gb) on Amazon. In the end I put it down to it being a duff stick or it being one of those sticks that uses compression to squeeze data onto memory half its size.

I would double double check the stick with a friend to see if they have the same problem or see if you can borrow a friends know working stick to test.

Thats pretty much me teaching you to suck eggs I expect but I hope it helps.

If it's cheap and came off eBay then it may be nowhere near the capacity it's supposed to be. Some unscrupulous operators buy cheap small-capacity sticks and program them to think they're bigger so they can sell them for more money.

When they run out of space, they just start over-writing older files. But they're normally so big nowadays it takes people a long time to realise anything is going wrong.

I would go with fake capacity on the USB stick. You can test it with something like http://sourceforge.net/projects/usbmst/

Wow - 3 replies, each one a belter.

I'll try it when I get home later.

    Thanks, guys.

As others have said more than likely a fake [capacity] usb stick.

Always buy from a reputable dealer. I used loads of sticks and cards from www.7dayshop.com with no problem, and there prices are not too bad, either.

Tobo, if it's not about software (e.g. viri/malware), then it should be hardware (USB port or stick). For instance, my 32GB USB 3 works alright in USB2.0 mode, but glitches when in USB 1.1; that's why my front (lagacy) USB won't do, only rear (no pun intended). If you've got another PC, then just make sure.

Also I had an issue with my HD camera, which saved files, but made them HIDDEN attribute. It took me awhile before I got it in Total Commander, while the worst case was with the EFS enabled ;)

Just a quick 'thank you' to everyone that offered help with my problem.

They were indeed cheapo rip-off sticks that were overwriting themselves, and the eBay sellers have given me a full refund (the cheeky scamps!).

I never knew the problem was so prolific on eBay. Naive, I know.

    Thanks again.

I had this problem a couple of years ago buying a 16gb MP3 player...which was actually 2gb. The seller at first sent me another one (also 2gb) then finally refunded my money.

So I got 2x 2gb mp3 players and my money back, yay ebay
