Celebs

edited April 2005 in Games
Hi

I realise this has probably already been asked (sorry if I'm bringing up an old subject) but do we have any "celebrities" in our midst?

In other words, people that have programmed games, owned games companies, worked for Sinclair or Amstrad during the halcyon days of the Speccy? I see we have the esteemed Jonathan Cauldwell (we're not worthy!) as a regular forum member (my chin dropped when I saw that post)... but do we have the Matthew Smiths, the Jon Ritmans, the Pete Cookes or the legends of our time?

If so... where do I send the autograph requests? (lol)

[On a side note... as Paul McKenna seems to have been confused with the hypnotist, I just want to make doubly sure that 'Manic Miner' Matthew Smith is nothing to do with 'Most Haunted sceptic' Matthew Smith?]

I'm the love-child of Myra Hindley and Jonathan King.

erm... on second thoughts, I better not mention that.

I don't know anyone famous unfortuately. However, I went for a pizza with Matthew Smith on the day before CGE 2004.

.. and I've met Captain Sensible three times.

and my next door neighbor's uncle's milkman used to deliver milk to Ted Moult.

    NOW THAT'S FAME.

Don't think I qualify as a 'celeb' but I did work for Telecomsoft (Firebird/Rainbird/Silverbird) and then Mirrorsoft (and Sony for a short while). I knew quite a few of the old school programmers like David Braben, Paul Shirley, Ross Goodley, Tony Crowther, Ian Oliver, etc.

I actually worked for Ted Moult in the summer of 1985 and 1986.

    What a small world.

We would all say hello and generally make a fuss about being sat next to him, as if he was an a-list celeb! This was about 1998 so he was well out of his prime (although some would say he was never in his prime!).

Strange in that the next season there was someone else sat in that seat!

I once passed through Ashby-de-la-Zouch on a coach, on the way to Alton Towers... does that count?

And I got a copy of Odin's Heartland with my shareware copy of Z80 (version 3.something), this of course being years before it became a pirate copy (I still have it :p) -- seldom have I seen a game which looks and sounds so impressive, and yet is such utter crap!

Someone once told me that Tony Knowles was a transvestite.

I don't know if it's true or not, but when I saw him competiting in the World Snooker Trickshot competition on Eurosport, I'm SURE that he was wearing eye makeup.

I work for a nasty government department which also has a public counter section. I met Melinda Messenger in work not so long ago. She was loverly. Although I couldn't find anything for her to sign so she let me have her own personal copy of Closer magazine and autographed her page.

And once, also in work, I had to phone a man called Maurice Micklewhite and I started off by saying. "Hello Mr Micklewhite, I'm calling about... are you really the Maurice Micklewhite?..." and he said "Who?".

When I was about 16, I borrowed a pair of shoes off one of the Oliver twins, so we could get in to this night-club in Leamington. I threw up all over the shoes, we all got kicked out of the club, and then I proceeded to throw up all over their flat later on!!

I take it the Oliver twins didnt go to the nightclub ? They never seemed the type to be into clubs or drinking !

Erm, I met Tom O'Connor once. And shook the hand of the drummer from Lush two days before he killed himself.

    That's my story anyway.
