  7zip is an excellent bit of software.
  
  RAR files on the other hand are evil :p

  +1 for 7zip ive been using it for years. Probably best util for this sort of thing on the net.

  Personally I work a lot with Total Commander and it hasn't any problems with .rar
  
  I don't remember if it supports it by default or if I had to install some plugin.
  
  By the way .rar is very popular in Russia and if you visit some Russian Spectrum forums you'll notice that they use .rar most time instead of .zip.
  
  Maybe that's some kind of patriotism - rar format was created by a Russian guy :)

  Lovely software. It ships unrar.dll for decompressing and can use rar.exe for compressing.

  7z is a great format and was created by a Russian guy too, but rar started a long time ago and has a wider spread.

  The big difference is that he released both the source for 7-zip and the format specification along with it. The only reason there are so many RAR files out there is the widespread piracy of WinRAR :p

  I am surprised I am the only one here to prefer PeaZip. It's fast, reliable, opens almost any compressed file format known to mankind, its WinRAR-like interface is very user-friendly and it integrates very well into the environment (at least under Windows).
