SU after mid 86 was a load of rubbish and I think you'll find most people think the same...
So what? Much more people thought of the contrary, otherwise SU wouldn't have survived well into 1993.
Moreover, most people think the Spectrum is "a load of rubbish", and if you visit your average C64 or Amstrad forum, you'll find most people agree with that. Do I care for that? No. Do I visit those forums writing those computers are "Rubbish with a capital R" meant to rob parents of their money and spread corruption and rejection of moral values among the youth? No way Jose.
Let us enjoy reviving the good old times and stop whining, you'll never convince me or anyone else who thinks differently from you of what you say. Especially if you use certain words.
SU started out as the highbrow broadsheet of the Spectrum scene and ended up as its gutter tabloid. I'm sure the move did a lot to keep the circulation figures up, but it certainly didn't endear the new format to much of the original readership.
Still, even in it latter years, there were usually parts of the mag that were worth a read. I largely stopped buying it, but I'd still give it a browse in the newsagents before picking up YS instead; well, unless the cover tape was particularly desirable.
Think I might go and play it now just to hear the immortal words "Geck Eddie". It's from the software house that brought us "SQIJ", so it's bound to be a classic.
I loved YS and thought it was really funny. SU I found really childish and Crash's attempts at humour left me cold. I remember they kept mentioning a fake game called Danny the Duster and it just wasn't funny.
General consensus in the past puts the start of Crash's downfall when the covertape wars started and it became a pamphlet rather than a magazine. I think it goes further back than that. For me it started when Nick Roberts became the focal point of the mag with his stupid street-cred crap and designer clothes nonsense. In fact I'd put him on an annoyance level with that stupid bear ;-)
I rated Crash the highest of the mags back in the day, but coming back to the reviews I think YS was probably better - some of the reviews are genuinely funny whereas Crash's for the vast majority were very po-faced.

I honestly love this game. It's on a par with that rally game we were all playing the other week in so-crap-it's-great terms

SU obviously survived it's shift in editorial, and managed to maintain it's readership, else it would've folded in '88 or '89.
It's also fairly clear that by '93 the majority of Spectrum users had moved to different platforms: Not surprising given the falling prices of 16-bit computers (by '93 the 500Kb 520ST was ?250, Amiga A600 was ?299) and the rise of consoles.
Personally I preferred Crash, not least because it's reviews were, for the most part, in line with my own views.
Agreed. However. just to clarify. my reason for creating and posting to this thread isn't to perpetually revive the mymag v yourmag debate, but just to post direct links to what IMHO were the best bits of SU for those that like that kind of stuff. I'd be interested to look at the same thing from other mags if anyone else has the time.
I think Crash and SU were merged around late 1991/early 1992 but that didn't last long.
I stuck with YS till the very end.
If you read the last issue of YS theres mention of a fanzine that was being started by a couple of the staff called Your St Clair, does anyone know if anything came of it?

Yeah, but who cares? What's the point of this argument again?

I thought discussion forums were made to let people compare their thoughts and reach some sort of point together, actually...

Perfect! That's my evening's entertainment sorted.
Towards the end most of the micro journalists needed a good slap!
I don't think the real world is any further ahead in that regard...
More to the point, what's this thread doing in Games? It should be in Sinclair Miscellaneous. Come on mods, FGS  :D

Christ, you're right. And it really does sound like "Geck Eddie" (not only that, if you pause the game you get "Balls!")

How anyone can defend that type of cretinous drivel I'll never know...

SU was the longest running contemporary UK magazine dedicated to the Spectrum.
Crash: February'84 - April'92
Sinclair User: April'82 - April'93
Your Spectrum/Sinclair: June'84 - September'93
SU obviously survived it's shift in editorial, and managed to maintain it's readership, else it would've folded in '88 or '89.

"Viva la difference!", I say.

I remember reading that back when it was published. It's still brilliant today.
