It doesn't say its been found, just that its unseen. No doubt its the new game they've been working on, 28 years after the last one. Just wordplay/marketing spin. I doubt Smith has done more than passed an eye over it if he's seen it at all.

Although I loved the quirky Britishness of the original games, I really couldn't be less interested in playing another game in the series. The Speccy put me off 2D platformers for life.

Has it been 28 years since the last one?

even super mario island on the snes ? :-o . just curious if I'm the only one thinking WOW , since it is such a broad genre.

I wasn't a major fan of JSW, and MM I can take or leave.. things like star quake and underwurlde impressed me more (even though I am rubbish at it).

I've never played that one, nor really any of the first few Mario games. I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE single-screen games (yes, even MM at times, and I lump in R-type because each level is just one long screen ... not enough exploring for me :-( ) Played Paper Mario on the N64, and that was a joy to play.

I was ok at Star Quake, and it was one of those games that was excellent to play just for the sake of mapping it. It seemed like there were so many sections to visit.

Underwurlde ... don't get me started. I was terrible at it! Nuff said!!! NO, I SAID GOOD BYE, SIR!

Especially Super Mario on the SNES.

More information and the game released today:
‘Willy’s Great Adventure’ for the ZX Spectrum is authorised by Matthew Smith, author of ‘Manic Miner’ and Jet Set Willy’. ‘Willy’s Great Adventure: ZX Spectrum’ will be available from the iTunes App Store, from the Google Play Store and for Amazon Kindle Fire / HD on Friday 28th June, 2013 and after for Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8.

‘Willy’s Great Adventure’ was developed by Terry Lloyd in 1985, as an homage to Matthew Smith’s ‘Miner Willy’ games. ‘Willy’s Great Adventure’ has not previously been released and is believed to be otherwise unknown, until offered to Elite (in an email at 9:50am on 12th July 2012) for publication.

“I can confirm it has never seen the light of day. Unless someone stole it off my computer and put it out there without me knowing {:~). I’ve been playing it through again myself to test it, and I have to say I think it’s one of the most complete and totally customized mods out there (in terms of all new rooms, tiles and sprites). Although there are some other good ones I’ve played, a lot of them keep the original graphics and just have new rooms, while some change the graphics but the rooms and map are very similar to the original. Whereas, WGA changed about 98% of the original stuff (Willy even has a new hat, an Indy style adventurer’s Fedora).” – Terry.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Matthew Smith and Elite have previously announced that they are to co-operate in the development and publication of a new game. ‘Willy’s Great Adventure’ is NOT that game. A further announcement about that game will be made at a later date.

    Authorised :(

I expect it is on the Spectrum of it was written in 1985? Maybe I should get my Spectrum Manic Miner remake finished, add a level editor and 40 extra levels, and offer it to Elite as well?

Shall we all do it and say "I wrote this in 1985..."!!!

    My thoughts exactly.

Also, it's not even a Universal app (on iOS), so you have to pay ?1.49 twice to get an iPhone AND iPad version! That's unacceptable in 2013.

(Willy even has a new hat, an Indy style adventurer?s Fedora).?

Yeah! That's never been done before

You're just annoyed Matthew Smith didn't officially authorise Miles' Mad Mission.

I wouldn't authorise it either, not if I had to pay for my own game twice ;)

iOS? I just thrown away my iPad in trash bin because there were no erotic applications on it.

Can we determine if it was done with one of the newer editors just by examining the code?
  • edited June 2013
downloaded it on my ipad, just had a few goes

nice looking jsw clone with more emphasis on going in a certain direction than randomly exploring anywhere you want (seems that way to me anyhow)

few nice touches like deciding where you want each key on the screen and they've replicated the look of the 48k rubber keys

    not bad!

    What a load of s**t.

A ton of hype over nothing.
  • edited June 2013
Well we'll all wait to see if Matthew is more involved with the next game.

Is it just an emulator job and as slow as the original JSW? 'Cos I may have some programming to do in that case (I reckon I could speed up JSW as well as Manic Miner. I hate JSW though ;) ).

Good to see another Spectrum game recovered but all this hype about an old hack is just a shame.

As karingal implied, I'm not so sure about the "recovered" part.

Let's hope Matthew Smith's new game is something special, although I suspect that won't see a Spectrum release either. Not that I would expect it for free, but at least give people the option to buy an emulator image or (even better) a proper tape release.

I'm inclined to believe it is an old game. I cannot visualise Terry (assuming it is he) faffing about with JSWED or equivalent to create a new JSW mod.

Good point, and I hope you are right.

The sad thing is, despite my reservations I would have bought it, but not being Universal is a deal breaker for me. It's not the money (2 x ?1.49 isn't going to break the bank), but being forced to buy the same game twice just feels wrong.

But the iPad version will be HD ;-)

No, but Terry has a pretty impressive speccy softograhpy of his own. Not to mention his later projects.

No, but here's the thing. ?1.49 is too much when there are much better free games or ones at 69p. I find it all incredibly cynical, really. Look at it in the Apple App Store - the nice cover art, screenshots of the opening text in the Spectrum font and the bottom half an advert to buy Manic Miner prints, a screen shot of the game, a 2nd screen shot showing the screen shown in the 1st screen shot only if Willy jumping up and a final shot showing the artwork. F**k off! If that's not incredibly lazy and taking the piss, then I don't know what is.

Now, I'm all for supporting indie devs, but they have to put the effort in especially when they want to charge a pound fifty for it.
But you know what? F**k it, people will buy it because 1) it's retro 2) it's Miner Willy and 3) just to see what it's like. And that is wrong. This is the type of thing we shouldn't be purchasing to send the publishers a message that we shouldn't be getting **** like this and they shouldn't treat their customers like ****. But gamers are their own worse enemies! "This game is ****....but I'll buy it anyway!" Publisher to theirselves, "Excellent, people are buying it. We can keep releasing toss!"

Let's hope they put a bit more effort into Matthew Smith's game, eh?
