LOOKS GREAT!!!! But please make re-definable keys!

Speaking of which: How do you change the keys in thunderturds? and mostly: WHY IS THUNDERTURDS NOT in SINCLAIR INFOSEEK??? I wanted to write a review of it and could not...(i love that game..sigh!)

    And emulator friendly! ;)

Heh yes, I wonder how many people will try Chromatrons Attack on real hardware.

I think davey sent it to WoS, it's just that there's been no WoS update for approaching 2 months now.

There are pokes for QAOP in the Thunderturds entry, you can use the poke memory function in your emulator to input them.

    Ah, amended.

Could you sum up for duffers why this can't be seen on an emulator? (if it's too involved just say 'it's physics' or sommat).

Well I can try... Stop me if I'm getting too technical :)

The mechanism is basically the same as the effect you may remember on analogue telly of a news interviewee coming on wearing a jacket with a strongly contrasting weave (for example houndstooth). This caused the colour circuits to go crazy and make a shimmering magenta/green pattern all over the jacket.

The technical name for this is cross colour and comes from the way colour information is transmitted in a PAL video signal.

At a basic level the TV can't tell the difference between the rapid changes from black to white (luminance) and the colour component (modulated chrominance). So by rapidly changing from black to white in the picture we can get some of that signal to bleed into the colour decoder. By being very clever about the pattern displayed stable solid blocks of colour can be displayed.

Oh I know, but it is a bit of a pain having to insert these pokes everytime...so maybe Davey can make this wonderful game (along with his new game) with redefinable keys?

    ..pleeeeeease!!!

Although the new game is basically finished,I haven't got a name for this one yet, I'm toying with the idea of calling it DUNG DARACH and the final game in the 'Crap' trilogy R-SWYPE.

Just designing the levels, title screen and eliminating bugs, so a redefine option should be available for the release...

    By Lee Spoons.

Check it out for the fantastic music if nothing else!
Ace music, but (no offence lee) I couldn't be arsed to even finish one go :-)

Also Sam Fox stripping in text form was groundbreaking. I mean people read erotic novels don't they. Same thing

Forgot to add a disclaimer for Chromatrons Attack: GAME FEATURES FLICKERING IMAGES

    I've managed 1382 but can't get anywhere near the 1900 :o

Weird though, just loaded again and it's not flickering, though I can still see a bit due to the colour. Either the tape's not loading properly or my 128 has gone wonky.

I don't really know my hardware but I'm going to assume the game has over exerted the pneumatic valve that operates the spring for the shadow screen switcher. In which case guesser owes me a working 128k .
  • A game that breaks your machine. Let's hope nobody from Microsoft is reading this!

There should be less visible flicker when the game is working properly than when it isn't! (on real hardware obviously) :)

Nah something is different to earlier, the hash pattern is staying exactly the same so I can't see the walls, only the wall edge. Weird.

I've not had a very detailed look at the code* but just for interest what is the reason you have gone for 90 and its XOR instead of the classic hash, 85 and 170, for the background?

*Hence the absence of pokes, sorry. Been banging my head against a wall with some other code and couldn't face hacking

I had a similar thing once when testing this. It was the result of having the saturation or similar setting down too low on the TV.
Could also happen if the fine-tune is out a bit when using RF.

Ah thanks! Just to make sure I've got the science right: this mean guesser needs to buy me a new telly too?

(I'll try a fine retune (coarse didn't help), I've not changed the saturation but tuning does drift)

No, the older the telly is the better :p

That's very odd, do you mean everything is the same colour or that the whole screen is switching between pink/green at 50Hz and coming out as a flickery grey?

    Because. :)
That's how the seekrit distort-o-tron engine works :p

Hah, if you have as much "fun" reverse engineering it as I had debugging it you'll probably make a dent in the wall ;)

    Hey Dave

I wonder if this game can make an entry into the CGC
    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0026386

I just discovered and although I think it is a crappy game, I also think that it is a good idea that deserves to be picked up and made into a really good game

  • How about a mini compo to see who can do the best remake?

It won't do it now! Honest sir!

Presumably as p13z described, a transient tuning issue?

At least I improved my hi score.

Aha does that mean 170/085 looks clearer on an emulator? I must work out how the 128 works then I'll be able to test this :-P

Heh good call, Had a quick look and I agree, it looks a good idea that could be improved on. I can't take it in the comp unless the author submits it of course but I think a remake is a good idea. Especially a multicolour remake perhaps? But please could I ask (sorry long story :-)) that such a discussion take place in a different thread - perhaps in new game ideas?
How about a mini compo to see who can do the best remake?

Sounds great fun! Might fit in nicely with the August crap games festival (details to follow...).

I think something similar was mentioned earlier in the thread (by apenao?), just a couple of things I think should be considered:

-if remaking a recent game permission should be obtained from the author unless very sure they'll be ok with it (old stuff is fair game in the CGC in my opinion), for the record mine are all fair game :-).
-there should be at least 2 entries to call it a competition*, could a couple of people drop me a message to say they'll do something & I'll start the comp.

*speaking of which the CGC Otter competition only has one entry! The prize is to have an otter sponsored in your name you know! For shame!

No, it's the other way around, the pattern I settled on was the best compromise on real machines for both RF and composite outputs. You'd think that a plain 50% grey would work best but there was some reason why it wasn't... My initial experiments on this stuff were absolutely ages ago so I can't remember precisely :p
