It's about time... Yes, it's back! Yes, it's been a long time! SAM Revival 24 is now finally out. It's been a rocky road to get this issue done, and unfortunately work on new SAM Coup? bits and bobs hasn't always been able to feature high on my list of priorities recently. Please remember it's always been just a hobby for myself over the last 19 years, never a business, so thanks for your patience and I now hope to get things back to normal.

Inside issue 24...

- 40 pages packing in the news from around the SAM Coup? Scene.

- What happened to Sandman's Shadow - information, screenshots and sketches from Gordon Wallis about the point-and-click adventure game he was developing back in 1992.

- Developer Diary - Lots of info from SAM developers featuring a Space Invaders Arcade Machine Emulator (Simon Owen), Wubtris + more (Rob Evans).

- Coupe Correspondence - lots of readers letters.

- SAM Comment - kicking around some potential new projects for the SAM
Coupe.

On the coverdisk you'll find the full game 'The Witching Hour' by John Vincent (who also painted the fab cover artwork for the magazine too!) There's also the preview demo 'Minutes Before The Witching Hour'.

Issue 24 of SAM Revival cost ?4.99 (including UK postage) or ?6.99 (including EU postage). To order please see my website at www.samcoupe.com or listings on eBay.

All UK preoders and subscription issues were posted on Monday and have started to arrive with readers and I'm halfway through posting international issues so they'll be arriving during the next week.

More news soon on the next issue and other SAM related projects!

Still no signs of SAM accelerator?
By the way, I have a chance to buy a SAM Coupe. Is a BASIC compiler available for it, which allows to use PUT command and MEM$ function, and use more then 32K BASIC?

I've had my own prototype accelerator running since 2005, but the first version of the final PCBs I produce had problems (narrowed down to ground issues) and I really need to reduce the chip count too which I was looking to do with a CPLD or two. I've not had much time for developing on the SAM over the last couple of years, but I plan to be back to this in a couple of months time.

    No BASIC compiler is available.

What sort of thing were you thinking of writing in Basic?

Actually I do seem to remember that Simon Goodwin was doing some work on Zip at one point, but I dont think finished this.

Edit: I seem to recall seeing one of the prototype accellerator's at the Norwich show? 12Mhz if I recall?

Although from memory, you've gotten faster results than this as well?

    Yes.

At the last Norwich show (2004) I was still early on with the development of the Mayhem Accelerator, and it was only running at 12MHz. The completed prototype went up to a stable 20MHz, although the fastest I ever pushed it was to just over 28MHz.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sds7gJn-xz0 is an old video that shows it running the VIC-20 emulator on the SAM, at 20MHz for near enough full speed emulation.

If you are looking to develop something on the SAM, please let me know the details so I can mention it in SAM Revival magazine :)

I got a copy of the ZIP compiler, but it cannot handle strings. I guess, you must wait until ZXBC will support SAM.
Btw. Josef, it is possible to write good games in SAM BASIC too.

To be honest, my project for SAM is not even started. It's planed to be a "garfieldish" adventure. I tried some routines in the emulator using my knowledge from, Beta BASIC. SAM BASIC is good, but I need for my game 4-8 times more speed. If the game can be announced, I will contact Revival.
