Recommend a Speccy emu for Android.

edited February 2014 in Emulators
Am looking for a free, and fully functional Speccy emulator.

"Fully functional" in the sense that it's not a time limited emu nor a demo.

If there is no such thing as a "fully functional" Speccy emu for Android, then let me know about the second best FREE thing, i.e. "Near Fully Functional"

EDIT: Main requirements I am looking for:
-Can run PGD and AGD without issues.
-Can save snapshots (almost don't care what format, as long as I can move it to the Windows machine and continue with it there)
-Wouldn't mind RZX playback capabilities, but it's not a must.
-On-screen keyboard preferable, not a must.

I use UnrealSpeccy Portable, simply because they provide a direct download. It's open source, so no arbitrary limitations there and the on-screen keyboard is excellent for playing games (not so much for typing Basic code, but that's another story). It also supports the hardware keyboard if you have one. I'm not sure about any special features though, I didn't play with it much yet.

The one caveat is that you'd better use the Quit button when you're done with it. This could be due to the hideously bad power management on my tablet, but I had the nasty surprise to see UnrealSpeccy spinning its wheels even in stand-by and eating up my battery.

Works for me. Saves a .z80 memory image file you can grab and keep working on.

I use Marvin or Xpectroid, they're ok to play games. Marvin can browse through WoS database to get games.

although Marvin flags up some games as denied even though they're not, some major sprite flicker in some games

xpectroid seems to emulate better but the pad and button layout in landscape is just wrong

Do you have any experiences with combination tablet+android+emulator+gamepad?

Is there any android emulator which supports gamepad (connected via usb or bluetooth)?

The most of games are absolutely unplayable via virtual joystick.

Thanks everyone, will check out those suggestions icon14.gif

@Pavero: If you're asking me, then the answer is an emphatic no, I have no experience with Speccy emus(+keyboards, virtual or physical, etc, etc) on an Android device.

I'm not looking for an emu to play games (weeel, ok, on occasion) but rather just to use PGD/AGD and I just need simple keystrokes(virtual or physical) for that.

RZX-playback would be a cool supplemental feature.

@ZnorXman: Actually it was general question for someone who has any experiences with it ;-).

    @Pavero:

    WHEW!!! :-o

    :D

In other news, I tried Marvin ... and so far, I think ALL Android programs-errrrr-sorry-APPS* are terribly intuitive and annoying to use. No EXIT button???? ARGH!

*All four of them, Adobe Reader, Marvin, YouTube and No Wallpaper ... scratch that "No Wallpaper" is excellent, and the best [strike]program[/strike] APP there exists in all Android Creation!

Absolutely agree about the xpectroid pad, movement keys and fire are at the same side, on the left, that's not a good idea, especially when playing on a little screen (phones). Marvin's is at the correct position, movement keys to the left and fire button to the right.

Don't blame them, these are the new guidelines from Google. Those apps that still have a Quit button are doing so in violation of said guidelines. Good for them I say, but it's totally understandable that most developers prefer to conform.

Marvin works just fine for me on my LG e730 with cyano. Just keep the back button 3 seconds for exit.
    To 1 or to 0?

My personal experience with regards to Spectrum emulators *in touch screen devices* is there's always something left to desire in all of them.

My advice would be you should install both Marvin and Xpectroid and find your own experience, then let us know in the forum.

Just installed Xpectroid and am confused immediately.

Got a listing of games that come with the emu. I clicked bangerman.tap but got a semi-transparent keyboard which has this underneath it:"Use X to exit, use B to play" and no matter which key I press(started with b, then x), nothing seems to happen. Sure, the "key" is highlighted but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Why wouldn't it just load the game, when I click it(this is not a question.)

Xpectroid is really hard to understand at first.

Start the app. Press b. Select file game with arrows and press the b button again, and the file is loaded. The semitransparent keyboard appears because you touched the screen over the game in landscape position of your device; press 'switch' on top and it dissapears. It is useful when you must select any joystick, for example, at the game menu, if 1 is for kempston and 4 start game, press the screen, the keyboard appears, press '1' , then '4' and 'switch'. If you previously selected kempston in 'settings', you will now be able to play the game.

    Easy, isn't it? :-P

In vertical position of device, when loading a file, if you touch the screen over the game, a spectrum keyboard appears at down, instead of that semitransparent keyboard, and you can use every key of it, like a real keyboard. That's maybe a better option, depending of the size of the screen (good for tablets, bad for phones).

Thanks Juan! I didn't know the "Use X to exit, use B to play" wasn't telling me to use the keyboard. I didn't even see the XYAB Arrows on the left hand side because of the keyboard. Out of the blue I had that keyboard and was stuck with it.

Tried Xpectroid again and it's not too shabby. The controls are "slightly" better than in Marvin but I have to check out that one again also. I think I like the idea (in Marvin) of having a select few selectable keys in the upper left corner.

Another thing I like in Xpectroid is that it's near pixel-clean vs Marvin has a lot of fuzzyness with each pixel. I'd like to be in charge of that setting, if possible. Usually I prefer crisp pixels, while with certain games I like the old-style TV-blurryness.

    Oh, well.

Yeah, RZX playback on Android supported only by Unreal Speccy Portable directly from http://rzxarchive.co.uk/

Thank you Felix, Pegaz and djdron for recommending Unreal Speccy (Portable).

This seems like an excellent emulator!

It was easy enough to get the screen-size adjusted to 100%, something which I've not yet figured out how to do in the other emus. Sure, it may look tiny but it does the work!

    F'NAR!

And the virtual joystick seems to be more responsive, and easy to use vs. the other emus.

But anywho, haven't explored the other emus as much as this one (which either says a lot, or little about me ... or the emus.)

Oooooh! I wonder if this is what happened with me today, my tablet used up the battery a lot faster than usual.

You don't need to use quit button for power management purposes, it was added for forcing freeing memory. BTW, can you post android apps battery usage graphs when unreal speccy is sleeping (without quit button usage)?

Really liking Unreal Speccy Portable on my new Galaxy S4!

Great how it connects to WoS and RZX Archive to download files. And yep, RZX playback is a great feature :)
