Anyone into anime?

edited October 2013 in Chit chat
Hi

I was just wondering whether any fellow WOSers are into anime at all? If you are, then I strongly recommend you watch a series called Monster. It's absolutely stunning, give it a go, it's not your usual anime nonsense.

It all revolves around a doctor who is wrongly accused of carrying out several murders in 1980s Germany (told you it wasn't your usual Anime big-eyed gubbins!) and goes on the run to clear his name.

You can catch the whole series on Veoh if you want to try it out. It's a little slow to begin with, but trust me you will get hooked!

Yeah that's pretty much where I left it as regards anime, but after watching this Monster I'm well and truly hooked! It is a little slow at first, but I suppose they have to pace it that way as the entire series consists of 72 parts!!

I have to give Spirited Away a viewing, would you rate it Mel? Also, is that the one with Christian Bale as one of the English voices?

Love Anime! Spent the first 6 months in the states watching Inu Yasha, I don't anymore though cos' I got a work permit and Inu Yasha starts at 12.30 or 2.00 in the morning so no go anymore (it's a series about a girl who travels back to feudal japan and falls for a half-demon, these are very sketchy details but I'm not gonna explain the whole thing here it'd take too long).

Anyway I try to watch as much Anime as possible, the last ones that me and one of my friends back home in England were heavily into was the Lupin III movies and the Myazaki/Studio Gibli films.

Last movie I got hold of was a snide copy of Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust, or it could have been a bogus copy of Howls Moving Castle, that my friend got mail order from Hong Kong.

This was almost 3 years ago now.

The last Anime I bought and still haven't watched is called Thunder Prince and I bought it for $1 from Wal-Mart I bought it on Valentines day as I remember at the same time I was shopping for the wifes prezzie

Very cool DM, it sounds like you're quite a fan! I've also got something called Hellsing to watch, which looks pretty cool. It's all about vampires in England, but I went for the English dubbed version, as I thought it would be more logical as it's set in Britain!

Have you seen Monster at all? I'm almost halfway through, if it was a real-life TV series, it would probably land quite a few conventional awards in my opinion.

No but if you can watch it on Veoh I may give it a whirl sometime after work during the week (it's the only time when I get a little time to myself now).

I never even thought of searching Veoh for anime stuff (or maybe I did a quick search for urotsukidoji ), last thing I watched on there was about a week ago and it was an episode of Father Ted.

Cheers for that Mel. Wow, it's ranked bloody high in the IMDB ratings, that's a result! I'm definitely going to catch up on that one, am I the only person who hasn't seen it?!

Yes DM, you can find absolutely tons of anime on Veoh. I started watching one called Darker Than Black a few weeks ago before I became obsessed with Monster. That's more of a cyberpunk sci-fi theme, which is bloody confusing to start off with, but worth perservering with.

They made Akira into a film I just wish they'd make Katsuhiro Otomos first Manga into a film. I think Domu would make an excellent film.

    Anything by Hayao Miyazaki is well worth watching;

Nausicaa Valley of the Wind, Laputa Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Howls Moving Castle etc.. it's usually more along the lines of fairy tales, rather than gripping action or scifi (though there are often elements of that amongst them) but they are all great stuff and simply beautiful to watch.

..and of course for an early western take on anime, there is always the sublime Ulysses 31 - with some of the best synth rock and background music to grace an 80's cartoon!

james joyce must have been spining in his grave. :)

that laputa castle in the sky is one of my fave cartoons, i always remember that being on when i was a kid.

i went back and watched akira recently, its was ok when i was 13, but now i can truly appretiate the animation and the homage to bladerunner. tetsuto!!!!!!

Nausicaa is OK but it pales in comparison to the original manga. Laputa is probably my favourite next to the pre-Studio Ghibli effort The Castle of Cagliostro, considered to be THE definitive Lupin III film.

Yes, the manga for Nausica? was unfinished when the film was made and the latter barely covers the first quarter of the story.

That's the one problem I have with anim? - I have a big collection, and all of Studio Ghibli, but the Japanese story-telling style rarely has a significant conclusion. Spirited Away is probably the only one from Miyazaki with a satisfying story arc, though it does wander about a bit in the middle. Laputa is a good one too. Totoro doesn't really need it I suppose.

Princess Mononoke, though epic in scope, is more like watching a tale from history than a personal story. By which I mean in traditional western story-telling A****aka would return a hero to the village that kicked him out, rather than the rather staid compromise that the film ends on.

Kiki's Delivery Service is again a great film with the most brilliant opening sequence ever (where the cat turns on the radio, that then plays the opening theme). But it plays like a series of separate episodes that have just been stuck back-to-back, such that it's easy to just give up watching it half-way through. The 'epilogue' scenes around the end credits are a nice touch, though they just hint at chapters of the story they never produced (Whisper of the Heart has something similar, but much more subtle).

The only one I think that gets away with it is Porco Rosso - it's properly a film that works for kids and adults, and not through cynical gags like Pixar films but with genuinely entertaining animation and a deep emotional struggle between three of the main characters, and it's only after you've watched it through a few times you'd realise which three I'm talking about. But then for kids it doesn't satisfactorily end by him becoming human again; only from an adult viewpoint could you understand what the significance of that is.

P.S. the editor doesn't like 'Ash*taka'. I wonder how it gets on with 'Scunthorpe'..?

Last Anime I watched was Tokyo Majin about a year ago maybe?

Was pretty good but it only had I think 12 episodes, and then 2 bonus episodes which covered some back story of a couple of the male characters. It ended like it was meant to continue, but no more episodes have appeared yet?

Also even though it's crap by todays standards, and the story repeats itself over and over again I'm a big fan of Fist of the North Star. I've watched all the episodes of FOTNS and FOTNS II (I think it comes up to 184?), I used to own the movie which is total crap compared to the series, but the blood is actually red instead of bright white (There are only a few instances in the series where the blood is red, usually when it's splattering it's either white or black).

I watched the new episodes as well, which deal with what's happening a few years after the end of FOTNS II, and I watched a couple of the newer movies which deal with mainly back story, one in particular is the story of Toki (No not the monkey, Kenshiro's older brother, who wanted to use his mystical martial arts skills for healing rather than fighting).

Really need to see the new prequel series based around Roah that'd be awesome, might have to buy it though, as I can't seem to find it (Much like the rest of the newer movies/series) on the net in anything other than Spanish or Portugese? Maybe this series is popular in those countries? Or parts of South America?

I used to watch a fair bit of anime but in the past few years I think I've only kept up to date with the Ghost in the Shell series. The new series looks interesting purely because it looks like a prequel to the whole thing.

I need to get Guyver on DVD at some point. Not the films though, they were kak.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

From what I remember of Guyver it was pretty good? But it's been about 15 years I think since I've seen it? I remember it actually being pretty dark, like for instance him turning into the Guyver was not a pleasant experience for him? Unlike those farcical movies, which as you say were kak :D

Same here. I remember liking it but not much else. I think I watched it around the same time the Cyberpunk trilogy appeared. I think that's what it was called, it had Cyber City OEDO 808 and Genocyber in it. They were good too.

I was just about to go on about a series of 3 animes with 3 convicted criminals being bounty hunters to reduce their sentences that I couldn't remember the name of and it's been bugging me since it was on Channel 4 back in about 1996.

But I googled Cyber City OEDO 808 out of curiousity cos' it sounded familiar after reading your post and it appears that's it! :o

You've just solved a problem for me that's years old! I only really remember the episode with Ben-Ten the somewhat effeminate of the 3 criminals when he falls in love with a vampire, and tries to find a cure for her even though I think she may be his target? Another one I think the last one where one of the 3 of them ends up fighting a sentient undead super computer that predicts all his moves before he makes them?

Like before though years since I've seen it?

Think it may have been aired on Channel 4 as just Cyber City? Or perhaps Wicked City (That name reminds me of Doomed Megalopolis, which was also pretty effed up IIRC? And starred M.Bison in his champion edition colours moonlighting as a guy called Kato )?

That's where I first saw it. I've still got the bought VHS of it sitting near this desk.

Wicked City is more like Monster City and Urotsukidoji. Doomed Megalopolis was good. Not seen that in years either.

One series I loved was Legend of the 4 Kings (or Legend of the 4 Dragon Kings). Loved that right up until the last scene in the series. that tacked on ending just sucked so bad. If I ever get it on DVD I'm gonna make my own version and cut that ending off.

AD Police (part of the Cyberpunk Collection) and Appleseed are good cyber stories. I think they're loosely connected.

I'm gonna have to watch all these again, I can remember most of Ghost in the Shell and Akira but not much else!

    Yes! This!

....and yes the ending was a complete cop-out, seemed like they intended to continue it, even if the main enemy the Shiu or whatever he was called looked like an angry version of Wormball :D

A few notables nobody has mentioned, so I will :-)

Devil Man, great (but violent) Go Nagai two-parter, I also caught (along with others mentioned, Doomed Megalopolis, Legend of the Four Kings, et al) back in the day on C4.

    3x3 Eyes, excellent occult/horror 7 parter...

Dominion Tank Police, only ever saw 4 parts on Manga Video, but was hilarious

Ranma 1/2, first four series (excellent Rumiko Takahashi comedy, series 1-4 were directly from the Manga, after that, new artists and stories, not quite so good, and the movies, ughh)

Urotsukidoji 1 & 2 (I remember these, gross nasty grotty little movies but were they on C4 too??)

I've tried getting into later stuff... but really only enjoyed things like FMA, Bleach was ok, Naruto rubbish, loved the Death Note live action movies (not seen the anime)
